@jon-nyc said in Volokh vs State of New York: Saw this yesterday. FIRE is today what the ACLU was in its glory days. Indeed. Can you imagine the ACLU supporting the march of the Nazis in Skokie today? Actually can you imagine anyone supporting it today (cf Twitter v West). I know, it was an "incitement to violence" but...

@Jolly said in Seditious Conspiracy: @xenon said in Seditious Conspiracy: @Jolly said in Seditious Conspiracy: I think it's important, because it presents a clear binary: The FBI knew the riot was going to take place and did nothing, which is appalling and says a lot about the FBI. The riot was spontaneous, catching everybody off-guard, and was not planned. That pretty much means there was no planned conspiracy. I don't know much about FBI presense at the riot - but couldn't it just be the case that they send a few people to high risk events? I don't think we know their criteria for deployment. Doesn't necessarily mean they knew what was going to happen. They had embedded assets. So did I, the last time I was with jon's sister.

@taiwan_girl It's like any other law, it needs house and senate vote with a presidential signature, or to be passed by supermajorities in house and senate that can override a presidential veto.

Depends on where you're at. They gave several examples of living wages in the $80k-ish range, for a family of four in the South.

Writer's bio: Serge Bielanko spent nearly 15 years living in a van and cheap motel rooms as a guitarist/songwriter in a rock-n-roll band called Marah, before turning to marriage, parenthood, and writing. The chances of this motherfucker not completely crashing and burning in some gruesome midlife crisis is precisely zero.

@jon-nyc said in How to fix the environment: Feed 'em, Don't breed 'em: Several years ago Sam Harris had an anti-natalist philosophy professor on his pod. IIRC Sam put him in some intellectual boxes he couldn’t seem to escape from. It was an interesting conversation. That might have been the south african philosopher, can't remember his name. I do remember thinking the conversation was a train wreck. The guy had no interesting ideas. Just a gimmick he managed to parlay into an academic career.

@jon-nyc said in Appeal Denied: @Horace I thought you fancied yourself the answerer of questions, and that seems rather like a dodge. I was establishing that you have a perfectly good definition of 'ownership' of the sort I'm obviously talking about already. You're playing dumb because you don't like applying that concept to yourself. But in this case, ownership might be as simple as gratitude to the Republicans for being on the right side of this policy, and for being instrumental in blocking it, along with an acknowledgment that the Democrats are on the wrong side. You might even go so far as to acknowledge the populist false narratives behind this sort of legislation, and other vote-buying policies like it.
