You’ll notice how the assailant is described in the report as “an unhinged man” and “a man in an orange hoodie.” (And this is the New York Post we’re talking about. They’re normally less squeamish.) In the CBS video report, he is similarly described as “a man” and “the suspect.” Is it just my imagination, or when some random white guy attacks or shoots someone and the victim is a person of color, the races of those involved are blasted in the first sentence of the report and then repeated ad nauseam throughout the article or news clip? It's just your imagination. There are two sides to the media, the right-leaning media does exactly the opposite and exactly as badly. Also you're a racist.

@copper said in Two tales of restaurant jobs...: Since the European students won't be taking those jobs, maybe the restaurants can import anti-vaxxers to take the jobs. Not to mention that there is a shortage of literally everything right now. There was a stop and a start and the supply chain is whacked. People are fools if they think the pandemic has caused our population to significantly re-evaluate their life’s purpose and meaning. I’ve been laughing for a few months now even as so called evidence has come in. Fleeting thoughts pass like farts in the wind. Journalists respond to the moment blind to human nature.

The tragedy is that we all knew this years ago. The media didn’t take interest because the wrong party pointed it out. Now that Biden has made criticizing China safe and fashionable again, we get articles like this. So I love the article but it is not a revelation. Still I hope we continue down this path.

We use our oven pretty much exclusively in convection mode. The frozen fries work fine.

I think the 24" would be adequate for my needs, but I drool at the potential of a 30" or 32" inch machine. My current 2014 27" machine is working just fine, but at the end of the year, it'll be 7 years old, and since I can afford it, I'm thinking an upgrade would be something I'd give a long, hard look at. +1 My thinking exactly!!! @horace said in WaPo factchecker: "Nazis were not socialists": @klaus said in WaPo factchecker: "Nazis were not socialists": The NSDAP was very "socialist" in the 1920s; in the 1930s the focus shifted more towards nationalism. But in any case, the name "national socialist party" was apt. Is there a way in which more nationalism implies less socialism? Yes. A party cannot have an arbitrary number of main goals. If you focus on exterminating Jews, less resources remain to focus on exterminating capitalism.

Related but not really related. I thought a quorum was one more than half? If the Republics had a majority, did they not have a quorum also? (Of course, Texas may have different rules for quorum or maybe there are three or more parties involved?)

@horace said in Building Rockets: “What should we name our rocket?” “That depends if it’s cool or not.” “It’s definitely cool.” This is SpaceX, a company that named their recovery barge "Of Course I Still Love You." It's a nod to "The Culture" books. As you know, I read a lot of science fiction, and I'm always intrigued by the names that are given to rockets and ships. I'm currently immersed in the "Revelation Space" world, and there are some pretty good names for their ships: "Nostalgia for Infinity" "Lighthugger" "Accompaniment of Shadows" "Gnostic Ascension" "Scavenger's Daughter" In The Expanse, my favorite name was "The Weeping Somnambulist." In "The Culture" universe, things get more clever: "No More Mr Nice Guy" "Just Read The Instructions" - also used by SpaceX. "I Thought He Was With You" John Scalzi's no slouch either: "Yes, Sir, That’s My Baby" "Tell Me Another One"

@george-k said in Orange Man Bad: I'm not talking about his reprehensible personality, his erratic behavior, his off-the-cuff remarks, his (yeah @89th , I'm looking at you) lies. What actual policies were bad for the country. What "evil" has he perpetrated? As I have been known to do I will repeat myself. I’ve said many times I thought Trump pushed the conservative agenda forward nicely on many fronts (most significantly on the Supreme Court). Heck, I was considering voting for him as of his Jan 2020 State of the Union speech... however my primary issues with him include his incessant lying and making up facts on the fly (or even using the Bible as a photo-op prop?), but the main issues for me were his handling of Covid early on...major fumbles and poor leadership, and ultimately his absolute cardinal sin of democracy of not accepting his election loss. How any conservative is fine with that is beyond me...an absolute cornerstone of democracy was rejected by Trump. Anyway...so again, my main issues were his lying, fumbling of the greatest health crisis in a generation, and his anti-democratic handling of his election loss.

If anyone's interested, there's a nice paper from 1976 (!) that goes into the details. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0020019076900715 For instance, you can do a binary search for the first phase, that is, not just double but initially you double, then quadruple, then times 8 and so forth. That would reduce the number of guesses in the first phase to around lg(lg(N)) instead of lg(N) while also not making the search interval for the second phase too big.
