@axtremus said in What will Mike Pence do?: @horace said in What will Mike Pence do?: So, Ax, would you sign the petition? No. Would you be glad if S&S backed down due to it? Don't care one way or another. Maybe I should have qualified that by saying "if you worked there". I would be disappointed in my employer if they caved to such a petition.

My second Pfizer was largely a non event. I did a long run the next morning, felt like a hangover run. Then I felt like crap, took a nap and by afternoon felt really great....that was noticeable so I must have been compromised for a short window.

@klaus said in 15 dollar minimum wage: Will those raises only affect those who used to earn less than $15? If so, wouldn't the people who earned $15 before already feel silly because their additional qualifications over the <$15 employees don't result in any more $? No, they’ll just demand a pay hike, as will the regular federal workers. 40% pay hikes for everyone! Woohoo! I can’t wait to spend $10 per gallon of milk!

@george-k said in Masking at the Oscars: In 1998, the Oscars had about 57 million viewers. Last night, they had 9.8 million. I think it's safe to say that circa none of those 9.8 million were of the disadvantaged classes the high status woke at the event presume to speak for.

I can only apologize on behalf of England. First Piers Morgan, and now this. The thought of Nigel Farage attempting to energize his base in public is rather disturbing.

It is tragic what happens in these 3rd world countries. I have a very good friend from Venezuela, his dad was a diplomat. I'll always wonder what happened to his family. Likely they went from being part of the elite to being part of the hunted.

@axtremus said in Lowest 100 day job approval other than Ford and Trump: @jolly said in Lowest 100 day job approval other than Ford and Trump: I'm not wishing, I'm preparing. That is worthwhile discussion. If you don’t mind elaborating your thought, do consider starting a new thread to talk about how (and maybe when) you think the economy might tank, and what you think can be done to prepare for such it. I think we stand a pretty decent chance of stagflation. I think we have thrown money with both hands at an economy that didn't need it. If Biden gets his infrastructure bill, we're talking about 5.5 trillion dollars dumped into the streets. I already see inflation happening in the grocery store, the lumberyard and the car dealership, far in excess if the 2%/yr we have become accustomed to. Central banks are still monetizing large deficits with fiat money backed by nothing, ala MMT. I think companies and individuals both owe way too much money. Because of this, and because if we actually tried to go back to a more conservative and sound fiscal policy, I think bonds suffer and when the bonds tank, credit in general tanks. Too much money dumped into the system, possible negative shocks still to come in the supply chain, rising interest rates and a possible recession as the cherry on top. Might be some interesting times. Good stocks did ok during the last stagflation cycle, but I'm not so sure this time as I think the market is over-valued. I'm thinking real assets such as PM's, land, etc., may do best...

The problem in the US, and other parts of the world, is that the people who are yelling the loudest about things being locked down, are the same people not willing to do the things to get the economy opened up again. Seems kind of funny.

Well to be fair she lives downtown where it’s like many cities...a bastion of relentless tolerance, unless it’s tolerating conservative views. That’s heresy. Btw we are moving near Maple Grove, on the west edge of the metro area. It’s so quiet and safe there that our new neighbor, no joke, said “last year someone left some beer bottles in the street”...when I had asked him how was the local crime scene.

@jolly said in Black Schools: @mik said in Black Schools: They still never address why the majority black schools are failing. I can give you multiple reasons... Curriculum and teaching methodology instability. My daughter has been in inner city schools for 13 years. She has changed math curriculums and teaching methodologies four times. The EdD's and PhD's seem to think a different approach fixes everything. The kids experience no consistency. Change in education is not always good. Teachers. Most teachers simply do not have the drive and personality to weather the grind, violence and frustration of many black schools. So, many leave. Some stay and draw a check. Some fight the good fight until they burn out. Students. This may be the most un-PC thing I'll ever say here... You can't make chicken salad out of chicken crap. Inner cities are not as analogous to 19th and early 20th century inner cities. Instead of a lot of new immigrants in many cities, you have an underclass who are now enjoying multiple generations in a cesspool of crime, single parenthood, state dependency, drugs and under-achievement. The smart ones have moved out and upward, leaving the dumb to breed. That's not to say bad ground doesn't produce good plants...There are still really bright, hardworking kids coming out of those neighborhoods, but the numbers continually trend downwards. And lest it be said I'm racist, I make this comment about those multi-generational dysfunctional people, no matter their race, creed or ethnic origin. Culture. It dovetails with number three, but these kid's heroes are the corner drug dealers with the flash and the cash. If they are fortunate enough to have one working parent, who would they rather be like, their mom who works two or three jobs and stays broke, or the dealers and the gangs who lead easier, more oppulent (to the hood) lifestyles? Secondly, the culture in many ways discourages effort and scholarship. Even the parent(s) sometimes discourage it. Why should my kids do better than me?, is a prevalent attitude among many. The whole thing is nothing but a recipe for failure... There is a lot of true in what you say. You can take equal poor communities, and some succeed better than others. I grew up poor (didn't have indoor plumbing, probably didn't have a "real" shower or bath until I was a teenager, etc), but my parents knew that education was the way to make it. My mom has a third grade education, and even if she could not help with my schoolwork, she made sure that I had it done. No excuses. There definitely is a cultural part to it for sure.

maybe she was keeping it because she hoped that the VHS would increase value like this recent video game sold. (https://www.msn.com/en-in/money/topstories/super-mario-bros-sealed-copy-sold-for-a-whopping-660000-making-it-most-expensive-game-ever/ar-BB1fgbaV)
