In some way, it's everybody's dream to be sane in an insane world, as long as you still have your essentials taken care of. Then you can still eat, sleep, fuck, and bathe, while imagining yourself surrounded by people who are dumber than you. Culture and statistics come into play at some point. it's nice to have friends while having all those essentials too. So optimally, all your friends are also sane in an insane world. This push and pull between people having like-minded friends, while also being isolated islands of sanity in an insane world, is what you'd call California, and to some degree, all tribal culture.

As species go, the last few generations have lived through something akin to an alien species dropping its technology onto us.
