I've always been intrigued by Alastair Reynolds' Inhibitor theory. Also central to the Inhibitor project was the eradication of all species above a certain technological level until the crisis was over, as they believed no organic species would be capable of co-operating on such a large-scale project (an in-universe solution to the Fermi paradox). Whilst they were relatively successful, certain advanced species were able to hide from Inhibitor forces, or even fight back.

It rained a bit last night. Good. Haven’t googled how much these fires have spread west of me. This year the fires are early.
  • I guess I'm OK, then.

@Horace said in Rick Beato on AI: @Aqua-Letifer said in Rick Beato on AI: He's right. On the other side of it, though, more and more human-made things will fit into a fine art model. It'll be rare, impractical and not nearly as scalable, but still appreciated—sometimes for precisely those reasons. We've seen this already with the hipsters. They gave new life into textiles, vinyl albums, craft beers, film photography, etc. (About that last, film-only wedding photographers are becoming a thing in some circles. Because a negative is more special than a jpeg.) McDonald's took over the world, and now everybody wants to go to Elevation Burger and similar. We're going to see more of that in other disciplines, too. I have no idea how far that reverse trend will go. Probably not enough to make a living off of for most. But "AI-free" is going to be valued more, right alongside AI's convenience. AI-free is the new Organic? Eh, maybe more like the new "hand-made" but basically yeah.

@jon-nyc said in Homicide by gender: My guess: Violent predators killing people is far less in those countries so the murder rate is much lower and consists of highly personal things like killing your sibling or spouse for money, etc, and that’s more egalitarian. Japan rate per 100K woman = 0.3 Hong Kong = 0.2 Honduras = 6.6 US = 2.6 https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/VC.IHR.PSRC.FE.P5

Good question. I would say that some could be collected from career center at the college (feedback from companies that we hired X people from your college for example), and some would have to be self reported I guess. Not perfect system, and that is why I think college rankings are not perfect. I think that most people would agree that certain colleges are better than other, but I would put it into very wide categories - maybe by 25% increments rather than 1, 2, 3, etc.

Jeez. One of my favorite taverns got hit and run last night. Paxton’s in downtown Loveland had a drunk plow into their sidewalk patio are and take off. Luckily only minor injuries.

Interesting story. I have hear about the Japanese the continued fighting long after the war, but this is the first time I have hear about the Nazis. (Quite the submarine voyage. I imagine that the conditions in the sub were not so good after 66 days underwater!!)
