Where I'm at, employers pay into something called unemployment insurance, which is administered by the state. Now, as former employees begin filing for unemployment from our company, our rates do still go up.

I’m not talking about the order, I’m talking about the medical condition that would prevent one from wearing a mask.

@LuFins-Dad said in Joe Biden on COVID-19 deaths reaching 100,000 in the USA:

In all fairness, most of the deaths were over 6 months (December 68 - May 69) so the rate isn't that much higher for COVID-19. Also, while there was no lockdown, the population density was about 40% less back then, the number of people in the workforce was less than half what it is now with a much higher percentage of mothers staying at home, fewer people rode subways or planes, all of these things that we believe helped spread this pandemic, the people of 1968 were a little more naturally insulated from...And their death toll per capita was still not that different than COVID-19. Yet, nobody that I've spoken with that was alive then really recall it as being considered all that important. Hell, it doesn't even make the Wikipedia list of important events in the US for that year. I find that astounding.

If we had a 6 month flu season that took 100k lives using excess death calculation and in a non-locked down environment, most of us would shrug it off too. Look how many people shrug this off despite being so much worse.

Could the NYT draw as many eyeballs without the fluff?

No. The fluff brings in the money you need to do actual journalism, at a ratio of about 1:10: for every ten stories of crap, you can do something decent. A big problem is social media. Folks sharing links on Facebook, Twitter, and hell, even here, is a huge driving factor in the increase in subscriptions.

A very certain kind of story does well on social media. And it's not journalism.

That first video video is actually well done.

It's beyond well done. It's brilliant. By removing all the OrangeMan tics, etc, and assuming a reasonable posture, it makes it even funnier. I loved the "injection" part.

The pic of the Chinese bike graveyard reminds me of Henry Ford's famous saying about the Model T: You can have any color you want, as long as it's black.

That is very smart. Both Seedsavers and Baker Creek feature heritage seeds. That means you can let some of your plants to go seed and save those seeds in the freezer for years, using them when you wish.

So check with your friend and look at your varieties and decide whether you want to do anything like that or not...

Speaking of friends...An old, successful gardener in your area is an absolute weath of information. There are little tips and tricks for your area, you'll never find on a website or in a YouTube video. I still ask questions of my in-laws at least two of three times a week. My MIL in particular, could grow vegetables in the cracks of a concrete slab..

428th Fighter Squadron participates in Combat Hammer

An F-15SG from the Republic of Singapore Air Force takes off from Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, May 2, 2017. This marked the second time that the RSAF participated in Combat Hammer.

Joint U.S.-Singapore F-15s based at D-M during Idaho runway work
F-15 jets from the 428th Fighter Squadron will be based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base until the end of August. The unit from Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, trains pilots from Singapore's air force.

The F-15SGs from the U.S. Air Force's 366th Fighter Wing will arrive Tuesday and will "follow all D-M arrival and departure processes and adhere to noise abatement procedures" until their scheduled departure on Aug. 24, a news release from the base said.

A runway at Mountain Home AFB is closed for maintenance this summer, the release said. The Air Force said Monday that a dozen jets were expected, but indicated Wednesday that 10 of the fighters had arrived at the Tucson base.

The 428th "Buccaneers" are the U.S.-flagged squadron of the Peace Carvin V joint training program with the Southeast Asian city-state.

The squadron, which trained Singaporean personnel on the F-16 from 1998 through 2005, was reactivated in 2009 for training on the F-15 Strike Eagle. The squadron was originally activated in 1943, flying P-38 Lightning fighters in training in California, before taking to the skies over Nazi-occupied Europe just before D-Day in 1944.

    Tasty.

We've got an instantpot blender. It's freaking AMAZING for soup. I also make it for "energy drinks." (Basically the stuff we were going to throw out anyway + a shitload of apples + whatever else.) Makes everything velvety smooth.
