There are some funny numbers here
SA Active Cases peaked at around 10X of Daily New Cases (20K vs 200K)
USA Active Cases peaked at around 33X of Daily New Cases (300K vs 10,000K)
Does that mean USA cases last 3X longer? Or is the accounting different?

Cases had also dropped like a stone in Aug/Sept, then we saw what happened.
That being said, I'm fairly certain this winter spike is the last hurrah for COVID. From here it'll be a vaccination, and mask/distance tango for the rest of the year and after we get through next fall/winter without any major issues, 2022 will seem like 2019, albeit probably with an annual covid vaccination shot.

I've been wondering about that. They say that by late march the more virulent strains will have become dominant here. I'm not sure how that nets out against the amount of vaccination we'll have done by then. (If vaccination even helps in the case of the SA strain.)
I hope you're right, but I can imagine another wave, even if not as big as the one we're getting over.

Mask wearing by democrat politicians seems to be very well received at the moment. Mr. Biden just said he expects us to have to wear masks into 2022.
The polls will determine continued masking requirements. Personally I think there will be a Biden miracle this summer. July fourth would be a nice time to celebrate. But that is a little too patriotic for a contemporary dem, Labor Day is more likely.

BTW, China has pretty much doomed the investigation into the Chinese Virus.
