Not weird at all, that's exactly how we got the white elite ideology behind the wokeness. There is nothing more powerful than being an elite who's convinced the ignorant masses they're against the elites. It's also important to keep in mind that these people believe their own BS. As long as the good sorts of white people are in power, everything is ok. And they're the good sort.

Safety testing is so boring, and stifles innovation and all that. That's not a woke attitude, that's a young hot-shot attitude. Also, some old white guys think like that too - frequently because they want to save money.
Incidentally, on a vaguely related note our new boss came in this year, and apparently said "All I'm seeing are a bunch of old white guys". He wasn't wrong, but he won't be seeing us for long, and then they're going to be screwed.

As I said earlier, I see this attitude quite a lot from people who are highly educated technically, but are often running start-ups and small businesses.

I doubt the Trump boys would go around making fun of old white military officers and their fuddy duddy ways.
I don't think anybody not captured in some part by progressive culture, goes around using the word "white" pejoratively. Like apparently your new boss does.

Don Blankenship of Massey Energy is a good example, and you couldn't find a less woke individual. Scott of the Antarctic also springs to mind, although at least he wasn't taking unsuspecting tourists along with him.

I agree that the 'woke' thing is a sideshow in this case. This failure was about engineering hubris.

I don’t believe that is limited to the left or wokeness. It stems from ignorance and fear and there is an abundance of both of those irrespective of ideology

That's sort of what @Klaus was alluding to. Even if found, actually bringing it to the surface in time is a daunting task. Does the Titan even have any kind of rescue-attaching thingamabobs?

Unrelated, how are squids not crushed to death at that depth? (Answered it as I typed this, google says its because creatures like that are made mostly of water and/or do not have air that can be compressed in)

That’s because it took us forever to develop and deploy the technology to find it. Once that technology was available - thank you, Cold War era investment and engineers - it was just a matter of time to hone the skills to deploy it for archeological endeavours.
We have the technical means to locate Titan. Curiosity as well. I am sure there will also be the investment to make it happen.
