@LuFins-Dad said in Progressive Response to Biden’s SOTU: Out of curiosity, did any forum member other than Ax actually click the link to watch? I bet Ax didn’t watch beyond the first few seconds. Actually I watched it. It was a nothing burger. Not specific enough to be overtly crazy. Just stuff like “health care is good” or “affordable meals are important”. Also “Trump is bad and divisive”.

Hmmm . . . okay, I'll think about it. It does sound better than the horrible concoction of my childhood. Thanks, Brenda!

Yeah, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 23% audience score. That's kind of crappy. IMDB - 3.7/10. Yeah, it looks like I'm not going to waste my time on this one.

@Renauda said in Objective by whose standard?: @Doctor-Phibes said in Objective by whose standard?: @Horace said in Objective by whose standard?: @Doctor-Phibes said in Objective by whose standard?: @Horace said in Objective by whose standard?: @Doctor-Phibes said in Objective by whose standard?: People who talk about existential risks all the time are an existential risk. The word appeared in Biden’s SOTU last night. Go ahead and try to find a Democrat speech in which it did not appear during the midterms. I don't take much notice of Democrat speeches, TBH. 'Existential threat' is kind of their version of 'Socialist'. "I don't pay attention to the thing you're trying to make a point about" is not much of a rebuttal. I didn't realise I was trying to frame a rebuttal. You weren’t. At least I didn’t think so. I understood as it was written. That may be a problem for folks who obsess over buzz words and pop kulture phrases. His rejoinder, which was definitely not a rebuttal, was simply over my head. Please don't attempt to explain it to me. I will be lost in the complex subtleties.

I have this crazy idea that maybe they didn't have to correct for that shift all at once in 10 feet of track. Or maybe the track didn't break during the earthquake.

@George-K said in Earth’s land mammals by weight: I've read that the biomass of insects and arachnids exceeds even this. Yup, they're the red section. Also, the weight of bacteria WTF. [image: 1675882779289-ef46c2aa-2be1-4cb7-b2e7-184eed24d2b6-image.png]

@Aqua-Letifer said in Which Scalzi book to start with?: @Mik said in Which Scalzi book to start with?: Old Man's War or Kaiju Preservation Society? Something else? I need to pick a book before I ditch my Audible free trial. If you want a long-ass series, Old Man's War. If you want a one-off to test the waters, Redshirts, Fuzzy Nation, and The Dispatcher are all great. (That last is part of a series, but they're very short and great on Audible.) Yes.

Can’t think of any precedent for such a move. Doubt that it is even practicable diplomacy. Edit: did a bit of digging and found no other report of this suggestion from the Polish PM. I call BS that it was ever made. I conclude the originator of this dubious tweet is a Russian troll as his Twatter handle describes.

@Axtremus said in Finally! A great use for ChatGPT: So … no complain about ChatGPT having any ideological or partisan bias here, right? Right? They are doing something to avoid chatGPT’s self-moderation. I dare you to try to get those sorts of outputs from ChatGPT. Maybe they are doing word replacement for non political queries.
