I honestly get it. This is a fight that I grew up with at home, and now as younger generations have gotten older, it's happening in the office. But I find myself not being a participant. Just this week, I was working on a project with some proper Gen Xers—I'm a bit on the cusp—and 2 millennials. There was some uncertainty about how best to handle a few details. So, the Gen Xers and I wanted to make some alternates to try out different ideas. The millennials were shocked and offended. "What, and do twice as much work? They didn't ask us to do that, why are you suggesting that?" We found this both perplexing and hilarious. "They asked us to do a good job! This is what that means! And are you shitting me, this is the only kind of fun a stupid-ass project like this affords us, you're gonna just forfeit that? Are you sure you like doing this kind of work?" It was a weird conversation.
