They generally last forever. My iPad version 1 is still going, although I have a 2 as well. My daughter's Macbook from I think 2008 was still going strong until the battery puffed.

Maybe i am reading it wrong, but it does seem legal. Let us say that you want to hire someone for the (looks up a race organization) NAACP. In your application, you say that "must be a current member of the NAACP". Seems like that would be okay. Not sure if that would be different.
