For female writers (other than Le Guin of course) I've enjoyed some stuff by Connie Willis, and I loved Among Others by Welsh-Canadia author Jo Walton. I really liked the Anciliary Justice series by Ann Leckie, even though it touched the dreaded gender-blinded issue.
