Just finished that book myself a couple months ago. Actually read it rather than listened. Love Steinbeck. But of course categorical statements like "invention can only occur in a single mind" can be framed as wrong, for anybody motivated to frame the idea as wrong. Robotics, CNC, RC, should have rendered the human presence in (insert your mined element here) mines, or just about any commercial activity that is dangerous to humans, obsolete and unnecessary, decades ago. Instead we focus on the non-dangerous activities like arts, coding, design, financial, etc. Silly, stupid human race.

Yes, I have heard that. Right now, it costs more to recycle a plastic bottle and turn into a new one than to make one from scratch. (Interesting that most plastic things are petroleum based. Oil has to go up quite a bit in price before plastic recycle will work)
