@george-k said in Mid-air collision: Very violent, and any pilot who's "punched out" will say they never want to do it again. A guy I worked with many years ago ejected from the co-pilot seat of a B-52 over Hanoi. The ejection broke both of his legs which made his stay in the Hanoi Hilton even more uncomfortable.

It is indeed, and he sums it up well. "Get out of the way, stop telling us that, on the one hand, America is a racist society. And then those same races are the agents that's going to deliver you from yourself. What kind of message is that?"

Another thought about the old hospital cafeteria...Staff was not served breakfast, except for doctors. And the docs got whatever the patients were having. But no doctor ever paid for any meal. Another story... British regiments have a tradition of 'dining in". The hospital had a Resident's Dinner, once a month. Residents were required to attend and most staff physicians did also. Dress was coat and tie. Food was a grade up from our standard fare and was eaten off of china on white tablecloths, with silver utensils and crystal stemware. Alcohol was not allowed on campus, but it was rumored the docs enjoyed very strong grape juice with their meals, limit of two. Henry (or the head cook at the time) would be present, along with two of his staff. Short welcoming remarks to the hospital would be made by the Administrator and the CMO, before the doctors were served. After that, the docs could eat, visit or talk about whatever. It was very old-fashioned, but it served its purpose.

A review is certainly in order. On the other hand, I can see where split decisions could nullify the effect of all sorts of prejudices as well as promote them. I'd imagine in some cases you get a juror who will not return a guilty verdict despite clear evidence, or one that will vote guilty on the flimsiest of evidence.

@jon-nyc said in From the land of the Neanderthals: @lufins-dad said in From the land of the Neanderthals: By the way, my Doctor’s office is now offering the Pfizer vaccine, which I distinctly remember being told was impossible somewhere... And they are administering 60 doses a day. The Walmart my son works at? Averaging 3... They discovered it could be stored for 2 weeks in a normal freezer. Before they thought it needed ultra cold temps unavailable at your average GPs place. I was being a little bit of a jackass with that comment. There was a small argument on here about the viability and importance of getting the vaccine out to family practitioners while you were on your partial hiatus.

The EMP threat ties in with the grid threat. I think we saw what happened in Texas this past winter. Now, instead of fixing things or shifting power around as things thaw out, let's consider Achmed and a group of followers determined to take out a half-dozen large transformer stations in any highly populated area. You don't have 90% deaths, but you could wreck a large part of the economy for quite some time.

In an end-state (theoretical) - where all cars could communicate with each other - you wouldn't need intersections. You could get a lot more usage out of the same amount of infrastructure space. It wouldn't make much sense for any individual to own a car. I know that sounds weird to us. I love driving. It's kind of like how having a horse is a rich person's thing now. No one would think of riding their own horse down the street, or think that's a socially desirable thing.

Read "Greenlights," his memoir. It's all right, all right, all right. “As I put the car in drive and slowly pulled out, I thought to myself, Well, I’ve got three out of four and I’m headed to get the fourth, then said aloud, alright, alright, alright Those three words, those three affirmations of what I, Wooderson, did have, were the first three words I ever said on film. A film that my character had only three scripted scenes in, a film that I ended up working on for three weeks.”
