Just as an exercise, have you ever considered any politician as something other than an idiot?
I don't think he considered Thatcher an idiot.
On whether one ever considers any politician as something other than an idiot, you can also throw in, say, Winston Churchill or Ronald Reagan or King Solomon.
1000 wives? Solomon was an idiot.

Yeah, and what about that split the baby bullshit? Huh? Abuser.

Becoming a politician does show some questionable judgment. One will have one's life scrutinized and nearly every action criticized. For men, it seems like a great way to meet women of easy virtue. Why women wish to run for office is less understood.
Status seeking. Say what we will about the how everybody hates politicians, but within their day to day, they are treated as high status people by everybody they interact with, with all the privileges thereof.

Plenty of them on both sides aren't idiots.

Plenty of them on both sides aren't idiots. I might dislike them, I might disagree with them, but I certainly don't think anybody who disagrees with my own little personal way of doing things is an idiot.
I've never thought Trump was particularly smart, and he's clearly getting worse. He clearly thinks he's a freaking genius, and what he has is a gift for self-promotion. But smart? At this point?
Edit - I wasn't trying to reply to myself, but I'm an idiot too, so there you go.

This is what happens when you spend most of your life surrounded by people telling you how awesome you are.
What an idiot.
I can think of at least a few people who told him that he was not awesome

Losers, to a man. Just ask him.

To be fair, we talk primarily about the questionable ones.

I actually think Trump is incredibly sharp. His memory is noteworthy, and he’s able to think very quickly which results in fun debate or press conference performances.
But indeed his obsession with ratings, winning, rankings, and media coverage has blinded him.

I bet that guy with the carbon fiber submarine had a high IQ, too.
Sure didn't stop him being an idiot.
An inability to accept advice you don't like from people who are more knowledgeable than you on a given subject can lead to problems....

Name three nationally known.

Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill
(at least two of whom were assholes)

BTW, he can wave the documents around as much as he wants or he can talk about them being secret. Neither is a violation.
True waving it around wouldn’t make him guilty of sharing classified info.
But waving them around makes it clear that he possesses them which is illegal. The timing of the tape (after repeatedly telling the feds he doesn’t have them) establishes willfulness AND obstruction AND lying to the feds. And the confession that he could have declassified it but didn’t undermines his former claims that he had done so.
So yeah, this is enough to put the orange man in orange dress.
