When you need a blood transfusion, the sexual orientation of the blood donor is similarly not the foremost thing in your mind.
Are you sure you want into this discussion with a guy who used to inspect blood banks?
Yes, bring it.

Red Cross does accept donations from gay men who attest they have not had sex with a man in 12 months. It is to maintain an HIV free blood supply.
Personally, I think that's too lenient. The primary purpose of screening questions and actual testing is to provide the safest product possible. after all, blood is a drug and has to meet FDA standards. Screening tests can and do give an occasional false negative.
It's a stone cold bitch to walk into a patient's room and tell the parent of a 16 year-old MVA patient that the blood she received may have been erroneously tested and now measures have to be taken to try to prevent disease, such as hepatitis or HIV.
Or, reaching into the dim mists of time, does anybody remember the massive HCV look-back program?

Yeah, try getting healthcare providers to attest that they have no contact with COVID-19 patients in 12 months.
Ok, what are your chances of getting COVID-19 from a healthcare provider in PPE and getting a life-altering disease from tainted blood? Your chances of surviving C-19 are pretty good. HIV may have more of an impact on your life style and your life span.

@aqua-letifer Sadly, healthcare used to not be that kind of business.

Oh good, now we are down to negotiating
a priceprobabilities. Now, Mr. I-used-to-inspect-blood-banks, what are the chances that the blood bank system let slip a pint of blood that is HIV+?

Not at all, you’re just going down a line of argument I anticipated when making my first post in this thread.

Several, at first. Less as time went on. I mentioned the sixteen year-old, because that happened on my watch, so it's not some esoteric exercise. I don't know if the post-exposure treatment kept her from getting HIV or not.
But why run the risk in the first place? Just to satisfy your silky ass notions of equity or gay pride?

The little hospital where I do my PRN, received notice yesterday. First vaxx by 12/4 or termination.
How many front-line medical workers aren't taking the vaccine? Seems foolish, IMO.
About 30%, at least in my neck of the woods.

Damn, you're smart!
Do you not see how out of touch with real life you are at times? I don't see how you function in society.

He's just pissed off because he's had at least a month to offer up even one tiny little reason to be proud of Joe Biden and he can't do it...

Hey, shithead, I don't question Jon's knowledge of finance, Mik's expertise in legacy hospital information systems, Aqua's power of the pen, George's knowledge of how to pass gas or LuFin's knowledge of the current piano market. I've spent 41 years in the clinical lab biz, with a three year stint in immunohematology. Shit, I'm sitting in a hospital as I type this, jaw-jacking with the lab staff...About a fourth of them used to work for me.
If I'm going to hang a unit on a patient, I want it to the best I can give them. Admittedly, COVID has thrown a monkey-wrench into things. I had a bleeder last weekend that I could not get A neg for...I told the doc to put a cork in him and we would try to get some blood out of Texas. Luckily, we did, about the time his hgb hit 7. If not, I'd already made the decision to use A POS and try to keep him alive until we could find blood or the antibodies kicked in on subsequent units and killed him. Why no O neg, you say? Solid gold, friend. We're in such a bind for the universal donor emergency stuff, we treat it like the jewel it is. Usually, when you change types to something else compatible you hang with it, but you can't hang what you ain't got.
The doc makes the final decisions, but there are times when the best advice I can give, is crappy advice. But, c'est la vie.
Now, tell me what you know about crossmatch procedures and compatible blood. I've got a family if Bombay's in the area and I'd love to hear your learned thoughts.
