Kind of. “no win” situation. Don’t pay, the pipeline shuts down, no gas on the US East Coast for certain time period.
Pay the ransom, and that is giving into criminals.
Glad I did not have to make that decision.

It’s confirmed that they did pay the ransom, the conflicting reports seem to be the Administration’s role in the decision.

They paid it almost immediately, and guess what...
Colonial Pipeline reportedly paid the ransomware group responsible for a cyberattack last week close to $5 million to decrypt locked systems.
On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that two people close to the matter said a blackmail demand was agreed to within hours of the cyberattack that has impacted the fuel giant's systems for close to a week.
On May 7, Colonial Pipeline experienced a ransomware attack which forced the company to temporarily close down its operations and freeze IT systems to isolate the infection.
While pipelines are now back in business, it will be days before normal service resumes -- and the issues surrounding supply have already caused panic buying across some cities in the United States.
The publication says that the payment was made to DarkSide malware operators in cryptocurrency in order to secure a decryption key and restore systems rendered inoperational by the ransomware.
However, the decryptor was reported to be "so slow" that backups were also used in restoration efforts.

Not only that, but they apologized, saying they only wanted money, not to disrupt our energy picture. I suppose it is possible they did not know the impact of what they did, but I doubt it.

I get the emotion here and feel it myself but I don’t see any practical solutions, just suggesting we did it wrong. What would you do? If it is not pay and keep the pipeline shut I don’t need to hear that because I already know what that would look like.

Oh, I think they had to be paid. But, as Aqua said, pay them in a way you can possibly trace the money.
I'm not convinced these guys approach this stuff with a jihadist's fervor. I think if you stack
enough bodies, you can get their attention. It quits being fun when a drone sticks a Hellfire up your car's tailpipe and you make the evening news. -
