Yeah, our main law requiring manufacturers to prove safety came out of the thalidomide scandal. And it was much smaller here.

Klaus - I don’t think she’s adopted the attitude out of safety concerns, I think it’s more about ‘owning the libs’. Or something like that.

That may very well be true. But I observe that the vaccine discussions have become so polarized due to the "anti-vax" idiots that it has become difficult to have a real discussion about benefits and risks of vaccines. There are risks to vaccines (e.g., allergies), and for some vaccines the risks are in many cases more severe than the potential gain (such as for tubercolosis vaccines). That doesn't change the fact that the standard set of vaccines that children get these days are a blessing and a "no-brainer". But it would be a bad idea to proclaim that every vaccine is good and has no side-effects worth mentioning.

Over here, the Thalidomide/birth defect scandal is still very much in the public memory. There are good reasons for the long and expensive process to get a drug approved.

@Klaus at this point it doesn’t matter. Mob rule. I’m confident the vaccine will be made mandatory here.

I wouldn’t think so - maybe just for certain professions.

It’s possible that all non-coercive plans suck, at least for this particular culture.

The numbers are not screaming that our culture is doing particularly badly, and I suspect they will not scream so in the future. But we will see.

                Specific, measurable predictions?

There’s currently quite a bit of coercive social distancing.

That our culture won't be an outlier statistically compared to other cultures in terms of death rate of the virus over the coming year? Is that specific enough?

I'm anticipating masks as an ordinary thing. And the people not wearing them will not totally destroy the effectiveness of a majority who do.

It is a really low bar. It would be satisfied by something like ‘hey look, the UK fucked this up too!’ (Or whichever country).

Doesn’t seem as confident as your earlier statement.

"Numbers won't scream" is not a particularly bold statement and is adequately reframed as "numbers won't be an outlier".
