At least you're using commas and stuff now.
-
Well, that was fucking weird.

@copper said in Louisiana whites-0nly cemetery apologizes for refusing to bury black man:
And some states allow cemeteries to be defined as public accommodations, others don't. Some say specifically that cemeteries are not public accommodations.
At least that was the case a few years ago.
Aside from a attempt at a positivist rationalization of the indefensible, just when might that have been? During the Jim Crow era?
-
No, within a few years and currently
Private entities can generally do whatever they want concerning who they associate or don’t associate with.
Historically black universities are an example of this, they can limit enrollment to black students
The Burning Tree club in Maryland is an example of an all-male club, many members of Congress belong to this club
Public entities or those defined as public accommodations cannot decide to restrict their membership in the same way
I’m no expert on this, but I can tell you that this thread is a good example of how there is a lot of ignorance concerning this topic, people just love to shout Jim Crow and racist but in general it is ok for you to associate with whoever you want especially in private.

I'd stop digging, if I were you.

No need
But if it helps you to feel virtuous , please feel free to insinuate whatever you want
I remain comfortable discussing things that would make your HR lady faint

Doesn't anybody find it the least bit surprising that a cemetery could have this rule in place for decades, and apparently nobody noticed until now?
Not in Oberlin.

I just think you're in danger of making yourself look like a bit of a twat. I'm only trying to help.

@mik said in Louisiana whites-0nly cemetery apologizes for refusing to bury black man:
Why? By saying something may be legal when it very well may be?
Collecting photographs of porcine genitalia is perfectly legal, too. I would hazard a guess that if you stumbled upon a large scrap-book filled with such photography, and your immediate reaction was 'Well, it's PERFECTLY LEGAL YOU KNOW!!!', that eyebrows might be raised.

Freedom of association? FFS, its a damned cemetery and from what I can gather, a Christian cemetery at that. Full of putrefying Christian corpses that have well moved beyond caring whether or not their neighbour in the next grave or crypt was at one time a black man or woman.
As Cats stated it's antediluvian, an outdated and indefensible rule from a bygone era that was characterized by racism against the negro race. This is 2021 such rules have no place anywhere in any jurisdiction in North America, especially the USA.
As to whether I sound virtuous, I really don't care. I just consider the source of the epithet and nod my head. I'd much rather sound virtuous than like a George Wallace, who is exactly what some folks here sound like while they spin their nonsense.

Sorry, I’m sure you’ll be crawling around looking for your pearls for a while.

@doctor-phibes probably.

That makes it more interesting and launches this issue into my wheelhouse. I've been involved with cemetery stuff at the church for the last couple of years. If it's a private cemetery, the by-laws apply and not public accommodation laws.
Right or wrong, the 81 year-old lady was pointing out what was on the books. Don't like it? Bring it before the church and have the rules changed.
And apparently, that's what happened. You can now all dig your panties out of the crack of your collective asses....

@renauda said in Louisiana whites-0nly cemetery apologizes for refusing to bury black man:
@jolly ....and it took what and how long since the 1960s for them to review their books?
Thought so.
You sort your own laundry out.
Those things are not routinely reviewed. The operating policies are drawn up, then voted on. As long as they stipulate certain things such as plot prices, plot locations, grave depths, etc., the policies are not revisited. The state mandates a certain amount of funds in escrow, if plots are sold as perpetual care and the state requests an initial plot map and a periodic update.
Now, you basically don't know what the fuck you are talking about and on this issue you have an opinion based on no knowledge.
