@George-K said in "Dangerously Close": Related stories: Ermagerd! The Latinx's might vote for DeSantis. Florida Democrats are fretting over Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ popularity among Latinos, saying they are boosting his chances of becoming the first Republican governor in 20 years to win traditionally blue Miami-Dade County and therefore propelling his chances of a successful presidential run in 2024. LOLGF. The people you used to rely on are having independent thoughts! Democracy dies! Another endangered species: The Black Democrats: “The polling says we should be concerned about Black turnout,” said Bishop Dwayne Royster, executive director of POWER Interfaith, the Pennsylvania-based progressive group that organized the voter registration drive in Philadelphia. “There’s a level of frustration that folk are experiencing right now, right? Let’s just be honest: For a lot of folk, they’re seeing incidents of gun violence that’s permeated their community. People are struggling with the economic conditions.” Nobel economist Krugman is shocked that people vote with their wallets. You silly plebs, don't you know what's good for you? Gas prices doom democracy! I wonder if Bishop Dwain’s church and POWER Interfaith group are tax-exempt?

@89th said in HOA absurdity of the day: Personally I'm leaving my pool-pass as is. Sure it lists my emergency POC as "Horace" from "Burke, VA, wait Wisconsin, wait California, wait Texas" but I'd imagine they'd be able to figure it out from there. If they follow the public intellectual community, that should be enough info to track me down.

I used to work with a woman who's father was a conductor on the NYC subway. He had a woman jump in front of his train holding her baby. He said he could never get the image out of his head.

@Axtremus said in Restrict microchip export to China: Biden’s new policy reveals that the standard narrative of China’s unstoppable ascent and America’s inexorable decline is based on flawed assumptions. People were saying the same thing about Japan a few decades ago. The more things change, the more they are the same.

@taiwan_girl said in VDH - Will Democracy Die in November?: @Horace said in VDH - Will Democracy Die in November?: Good piece, from which our left leaning members could learn a great deal. I think what it is saying is that both sides are more alike than they will admit. Maybe not in their policy's, but in their actions. That was the rhetorical angle of the piece, yes. But it was less about equating both sides, than it was about equating the things the left fears the right will do, with what the left does. That’s actually a point I’ve made here on TNCR before, though I zoomed out and generalized. If you want to gauge the limits of someone’s reaction to a perceived threat, just watch how they characterize the threat. They will do at least that much, and also probably a little bit more, just to be on the safe side. When the left perceived an existential threat in Trump and his administration, all options were on the table. There was precious little planning for the cleanup effort to remove that crap from the table. Little thought indeed to whether that stuff would become a permanent table fixture. Sorry lefties but that existential threat card cannot be played for free. You chose not to be adults about a fair election result in 2016, now live in your world. You’re the ones who demonstrably can’t handle it.

Appeal Denied by Moscow Court A Moscow regional court declined to overrule the drugs conviction of U.S. women’s basketball star Brittney Griner, paving the way for the two-time Olympian to serve nine years in a penal colony for the possession and smuggling of less than a gram of hashish oil. The court hearing Ms. Griner’s appeal on Tuesday had the option of leaving the verdict as it is, reducing the sentence or overruling it and returning it to the lower court where the case was first heard. The decision sets the stage for further diplomatic wrangling between the U.S. and Russia, amid already icy relations over the war in Ukraine. Ms. Griner’s best hopes of returning home have long been thought to rest on a negotiated prisoner exchange between the two countries, but the process is complex.

@Jolly said in Forget Taiwan: There are bigger fish available... https://www.forbes.com/sites/craighooper/2022/10/24/as-russia-gets-weaker-xi-jinping-may-forgo-taiwan-to-grab-eastern-russia/?sh=378d75556ce4 Makes no sense. If the CCP wants access to natural resources, it would be easier for them to cut deals (and these can be secret deals) that are advantageous to China with Putin while Putin is weak and desperately needing support, rather than to militarily confront Russia. If Putin can partially mobilize Russians for its little Ukraine excursion, Putin will fully mobilize Russians for defending mother Russia from a bona fide foreign invasion (that will likely have the support of the Russian people too). It may be a wet dream for the free world to have these two formerly communistic and now autocratic regimes spin their wheels on grinding each other down, but I doubt neither is this stupid.
