I finally decided to watch the second episode. Better than the first but still pretty snoozy.

Next from Peter Jackson, we get to watch exclusive footage of the Sistine Chapel drying.

The economy in Afghanistan was already weak and flimsy before the war, and was mainly propped up by US operations there for the last 20 years. Tangible cash in the country was basically controlled by the US and international financial institutions (literally being flown in on crates) and with the US' recent pull out that happened over a matter of weeks, that basically cut off the cash supply (banks are closed, citizens can't get their money) and jobs throughout the country evaporated overnight.

I recently listened to an on-the-ground podcast (link here) there about the conditions in cities (and rural areas) and it is nearly impossible to describe the heart wrenching pain as parents described watching their children starve to death, and the looming disaster of millions and millions likely to starve to death.

One argument is the disaster in the country highlights why the Taliban cannot govern. Another argument is the US has a moral responsibility to provide aid. With all things, I'm sure the correct argument is a combination of all the others...but as a parent of a 1 and 3 year old, stories hit me differently now about kids starving to death.

@jolly We need more Asian trade ex-China.

Our trade with China is about 2.5x our trade of all SE Asian countries combined. The TPP would have helped to work on this imbalance.

On the plus side, our visual literacy is going up.

A big deal for us Americans. South America has traditionally kicked our ass in this area.

“Change the rules of democracy because a small number of us want them changed and will threaten you if you don’t because DEMOCRACY!”

You're just channeling Bernie Sanders who said that legislation is opposed by ONE senator.

No, sir. It's opposed by 51 senators. THAT'S what democracy looks like.

As Byron York tweeted (paraphrasing), "Perhaps the rules of the Senate should be changed so that it's only 48 senators that need to vote on a bill to get it passed."

ETA: And (pounds fist on table) we are NOT a democracy, and haven't been for almost 250 years.

I believe that I was the one that pointed out that it was 51 senators, and more importantly millions of their constituents that blocked that travesty of a bill.

  • I can't answer that.

    You're not.

Now, the next question is whether any of the Feds or Fed stool pigeons, were leading the riot.

Alternatively, let's load them with LSD, dress the victim's families up in demon costumes and give them sharpened pitchforks, then turn them loose on the convicted.

    Now, that's punishment!👹👹👹👹

Not to worry, since there was no violence involved, he should be released shortly. Criminals learn from their mistakes, state's attorneys, maybe not.

@larry I don't disagree with you here. It's a little like the story from the ship of Theseus: If you replace every part over time, at what point does it become a different ship? In my experience, if one is considering a rebuilt piano, then the quality of the technician who worked on the piano is at least as important as the name on the fallboard.

From what I understand, Steinway makes a big fuzz about repairs only being done with "original Steinway" parts - which is presumably a strategy that is just as much motivated by profits than it is about concern for old pianos. I recently heard a piano technician from my area bitching about Steinway buying parts like hammers or strings from standard companies (Renner,Abel,Kluge,...) and then reselling them for twice the price as "original Steinway".
