"Speak free" could just be a riff off of Apple, but I doubt that's all there was to it. There's a growing trend in some corners of U.S. conservative marketing that, thinking about it now, is a lot more prevalent in Australia. (Some of Cooper's new beer ads offer pretty good examples.) Pragmatic plain-speaking is seen as a virtue whereas sounding educated in a particular way is not a good look. I'd bet part of the tone there was deliberate.
