@taiwan_girl said in Impeachment Testimony: Why would it go to the Supreme Court? I don't see how it would. SCOTUS has been historically reluctant to get involved in political disagreements. The law here is pretty clear: The House of Representatives has sole authority to impeach - which they did. The Senate has the sole authority to try - which they are poised to. The only question is whether this is constitutional, for it states "The president," which Trump is not. Precedent for non-presidential impeachments of former holders of office exists. That is the thinking of the House, I presume. All that said, SCOTUS wants to avoid opening this Pandora's box, and allow Congress to do whatever they want. How, having said all that, there's still a question: Suppose Trump is convicted (which he won't be, of course), and he wants to appeal that conviction. Does he have standing to appeal to SCOTUS? I'd guess SCOTUS would not grant cert because, as I said, this has nothing to do with law, other than the constitution, which is sufficiently clear that this is a political, not legal, process. The other interesting question is whether the Senate has subpoena power to compel testimony.

@jolly It is not like a "switch". Think of it like a big train. You can start the brakes on the train, but the train will continue to move forward for a period of time.

@loki said in Hey guys! There’s still time!: I did the Dyson cordless for Xmas last year, in part as a joke...was not received well at all. By the afternoon it was her favorite toy. As I still get thanked. I bought my wife a good coffee grinder for her birthday once... did not go over great. Nothing fun about a coffee grinder. Now she says it's one of her favorite possessions.

It kind of reminds you of that scene in Ghost. Okay, not really.

@jon-nyc said in Big Brother IS watching!: @mik said in Big Brother IS watching!: Yes, for specific actions or patterns. Not where were you when in the absence of any other indicator. They have 60MM customers and turned over info on 211. Thats a pretty fine comb. Yeah I don’t think we have the right to know who the 211 make up as it’s probably in our best interests to have it dealt with. Maybe a trusted person can review (justice roberts?) and tell us all is well.

Those are great. We don't have nearly as many - the most obvious one I can think of is shandy-drinker.

@klaus said in Puzzle time: Geometry: Here's a solution that doesn't involve any angles. Radius of upper circle is a and of lower circle is b and of the outer circle r. [image: 1612553719437-57550d93-1bc7-4811-8fe9-72c8b580c5bd-image.png] The segment marked with "b-a" has length b-a by the intersecting chords theorem. Now, by Pythagoras, (2a)^+(2b)^2=(2r)^2, or a^2+b^2=r^2. The sum of the areas of the semi-circles is 1/2 pi a^2 + 1/2 pi b^2, or pi/2 (a^2+b^2). Substituting in the equation from above, we get that the combined area is pi/2 r^2. Since r^2*pi = 1, we get that the area is 1/2. Yeap, that's the solution that requires Thales theorem for you to establish that the "hypothenuse" has to cut through the middle of the circle and thus has the length 2r. Without this you would not be able to relate "r" to "a" and 'b".

Hmm ... right when I was reading only the headline, I thought they would weight the garbage collected from each address, or just track the presence/absence of garbage containers at each address, and assess “blight” from there.

@brenda said in Just Count the Egg-Sucking COWS!: @mik said in Just Count the Egg-Sucking COWS!: @jon-nyc you cannot be serious. If that is true it borders on criminal negligence. Agreed. What the heck! That's ridiculous. Contact your legislator? What options do you have? Not a lot. The wife is immunosuppressed and no allowances have been made for that class down here. Kinda dumb, but that's the way it is...

Doesn’t quite seem to cohere. The generic women dot should be a weighted average of its subcategories, but given where the listed subcategories are on the graph, that doesn’t seem true.
