"When the Soviet Union was entering its last days, one leader quickly made way for another. The parade of old Communist hacks in their dotage became a procession of political funerals. Generations after the revolution and the purges, the only thing anyone in Moscow believed in was the power and decadence of the ruling class. That and the threat America posed to them."

Oh dear, what a load of bollocks. He really should have edited that out of his polemic.

    Well, he was CIA.

Yes and just how does that make that paragraph credible?

    Worked for Brennan.

    Jonah Goldberg's prediction:

I’ll cut to the chase with the punditry: Barring some scandal, Austin will almost surely get the waiver. Republicans will score some points: During the confirmation hearing, your pen will run out of ink on your bingo cards filling in the words “JV team.” But look, the Republicans will want one, maybe two human sacrifices during the confirmation process. And as a career military man, battle-tested, who would also be the first African-American secretary of defense, Austin is not the most attractive meal, politically speaking. Compared to that tough leather, Xavier Becerra and Neera Tanden might as well appear before Congress in a giant crockpot.

That’s why I think the JV team thing will ultimately be irrelevant. Biden will get his pick.

    Confirmed 93-2.

@rich I wondered if he brought what the trailer can handle. Those must be heavy - was trying to figure out how they were made (one of them fell apart when he was moving it). Wonder what they cost.

I'd be more interested in deaths per capita. Based on the world wide population during the Black Death years the totality of that must have been mind boggling.

It was between 30% and 60% in Europe. I read somewhere that a half of all Londoners died.

American conservatives are famous for never giving the slightest fuck about how other countries do things, hence it seems to be somewhat opportunistic to do that here when it looks convenient.

Also, I find the text misleading.

Mail-in voting is common or even the most common form of voting in several European countries. In Switzerland, 90% of votes are submitted by mail. Germany recently had an election where all votes were by mail (due to the pandemic); outside of the pandemic, 25+% of all votes are typically cast by mail.

I don't know about all European countries, but besides Germany I know that UK, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, and Denmark have mail-in voting for everyone (not just selected groups), hence it's not at all unusual.

In case anyone wants to know the given reason behind the censures:

"The party censured Ducey over his decision to impose emergency rules during the pandemic that the GOP said "restrict personal liberties and force compliance to unconstitutional edicts."

McCain, who endorsed President Joe Biden, "has supported globalist policies and candidates" and "condemned President Trump for his criticism of her husband and erroneously placed behaviors over actual presidential results."

Flake has "condemned the Republican Party, rejected populism, and rejected the interests of the American people over globalist interests." The party suggested Flake join the Democrats."

The rollout of Covid-19 vaccines brings with it the risk of a new wave of asymptomatic infections. The two vaccines authorized by the Food and Drug Administration have been proven to prevent illness, but not asymptomatic infection. Even after vaccination, the coronavirus may still temporarily take up residence in the lining of the respiratory tract, making it possible to infect others.

    Interesting

    Yes.

And suppose that the virus finds safe harbor in your maxillary sinus, and you don't get sick. You'll test positive, and presumably, be infectious.

If you have no symptoms, you might not get tested. You might just continue to go about the community spreading the virus.

“VoteRiders estimated that up to 25 million voting-age Americans lacked a government-issued photo ID.”

Yeah, I call BS on that. I watched a video one time of a right wing activist asking blacks on the street about their ID and how difficult it was to vote and they all were, well, basically insulted. Every one of them had ID of some form. I realize this could be a slanted presentation but seriously, it is not difficult to get ID and it would be a great idea to require the Federal or State gov'ts to provide free ID for voting an all other ID purposes.

Notice how ICU bed shortage stories just collapsed.

Do a coke news search on ‘ICU capacity’. I see lots of stories on NoCal and Texas in the last 24 hours.

First thing as saw. Multiple articles. Liked the title of this one the most as ending lockdown is suddenly important.

It’s unclear why the health agency waited over a year to release the new directive

Prior to the CCP virus pandemic, for individuals to be considered a case, they must test positive and show clinical signs and symptoms. But to be counted as a CCP virus case, only a positive PCR test is required. And no matter how many times an individual is tested, each positive test is counted as a separate case.

The WHO is now advising that a positive PCR test that does “not correspond with the clinical presentation” should be verified by taking “a new specimen” and retesting it.

    Well....
