CNN: US left behind $7 billion of military equipment in Afghanistan after 2021 withdrawal, Pentagon report says

Aircraft worth $923.3 million remained in Afghanistan. The US left 78 aircraft procured for the government of Afghanistan at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul before the end of the withdrawal. These aircraft were demilitarized and rendered inoperable before the US military left, the report states. The US military conducted its non-combatant evacuation from Afghanistan in August, primarily through that airport.
A total of 9,524 air-to-ground munitions, valued at $6.54 million, remained in Afghanistan at the conclusion of the US military withdrawal. The "significant majority" of the "remaining aircraft munitions stock are non-precision munitions," the report states.
Over 40,000 of the total 96,000 military vehicles the US gave to Afghan forces remained in Afghanistan at the time of the US withdrawal, including 12,000 military Humvees, the report states. "The operational condition of the remaining vehicles" in Afghanistan is "unknown," the report states.
More than 300,000 of the total 427,300 weapons the US gave to Afghan forces remained in Afghanistan at the time of the US military withdrawal, according to the report. Less than 1,537,000 of the "specialty munitions" and "common small arms ammunition," valued at a total of $48 million, are still in the country, the report states.
"Nearly all" of the communications equipment that the US gave to Afghan forces, including base-station, mobile, man-portable and hand-held commercial and military radio systems, and associated transmitters and encryption devices also remained in Afghanistan at the time of the withdrawal, the report states.
"Nearly all" night vision, surveillance, "biometric and positioning equipment" totaling nearly 42,000 pieces of specialized equipment remained in the country, the report adds.
And "nearly all," of the explosive ordinance disposal and demining equipment, including 17,500 "pieces of explosive detection, electronic countermeasure, disposal and personal protective equipment" also remained in Afghanistan, according to the report.

Sucks for teachers. I just presumed cell phones were banned (off and in a locker) during school hours, like 7am-3pm or something.

What would be the effect over this past half-century and what would the country look like today?

Hard to know. Probably overall the country would be the same, although perhaps there would be more maturity, intellect, and moderation found in our elected officials. Also, the country would feel less divided (although I'll continue to argue it's not as divided as the media likes you to think).

I do agree that, given the internet/cable proliferation and instant info available to the public, most for-profit corporate news outlets would likely not be very successful.

    Fake news.

    I don't have a TikTok account.

    Otherwise, it's mostly true.

    Especially the Mozart stuff.

    Wait...

How TF do you know what my pronouns are? Presumptive SOB.

Also, I'm not "from" Chicago. I was born in New York.

But, yeah, Scriabin is violence, and I'll forgive you for all the other inaccuracies.

In 1968, there were four villages in South Vietnam, where choppers were routinely subjected to ground fire, sometimes nuisance level, sometimes more. You may have heard of one of the small villages...My Lai.

After Lt. Calley led Charlie Company through the village and killed durn near everything in sight, no choppers were subjected to ground fire from the four villages for the rest of 1968.

    Any fire.

That's an outrageous example, but it explains how force can shape behavior.

    The Explainer

Paxlovid is the latest COVID-19 treatment that’s been all over the news. The drug was granted an emergency use authorization (EUA) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December for anyone ages 12 and older who weighs at least 88 pounds—and Pfizer recently began Phase 2 and 3 trials in children and teens ages 6 to 17.
Paxlovid is an oral antiviral pill that can be taken at home to help keep high-risk patients from getting so sick that they need to be hospitalized. So, if you test positive for the coronavirus (and your doctor writes you a prescription), you can take pills at home and lower your risk of going to the hospital.
The drug, developed by Pfizer, appears to have a lot of positives: It had an 89% reduction in the risk of hospitalization and death in the clinical trial that supported the EUA, a number that was high enough to prompt the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to prioritize it over other COVID-19 treatments; it’s cheaper than many other COVID-19 drugs (it’s provided for free by the U.S. government while there is a public health emergency); and, perhaps most reassuring, it is expected to work against the Omicron variant.
“I think it is the beginning of a ‘game-changer,’” says Scott Roberts, MD, a Yale Medicine infectious diseases specialist. “It's really our first efficacious oral antiviral pill for this virus. It shows clear benefit, and it really can prevent hospitalization and death in people who are at high risk.”

If what Makary says is true, shouldn't we know more about what's really her status?

  • Virtual Meetings - the stats

Do the stats measure parallel productivity?

Let’s say a well-meaning participant gets invited to a meeting but his active participation is needed for only 5 minutes out of the 45 scheduled for the meeting, so for the other 40 minutes he either “arrived late” or “left early” or “be on mute with video off” and still remain productive working on other things.

I’d be very surprised if a company doing its measurements based only on what’s recorded in virtual meetings can get to these things that are not recorded by virtual meeting tools. This well-meaning participant would just contribute to the “arrive late” or “leave early” or “mute/video off” statistics.

Before you ask “why invite someone to a 45 minute meeting when he’s only needed for 5”, the practical answer is there are many things for which a 5-minute real-time interactive Q&A can resolve a lot more than back-and-forth group emails that take over 50 minutes to compose.

Same here, we get them at Costco, too. The ONLY downside is when the kids eat pasta, Rao's seems to have much more of a red/stain on their cheeks than other pasta sauces.

BTW, the F-16 production line in South Carolina is still working on orders for foreign governments. Modernization of older F-16's is still done back at the old Texas plant.

Somewhat serious, somewhat not serious question.

But, will some birds live that would otherwise be killed by bird "lung cancer" or something equivalent since wind and solar are not as pollution causing as fossil fuel plants.
