BTW, as an example of things we don't make...That mill at one time had five paper machines, making colored paper, food wrap paper, popcorn bag paper, cardboard, writing paper, envelope paper, etc.

They now only run one of at the most, two machines, and only make a couple of types of paper.

Where's the other stuff being made?

    Give me three guesses.

    First two don't count.

What’s the modern day analogy for this?
Close the old MP3 and open the new MP3?
Trash the old MP3 and download the new MP3?

If rare earths are actually rare, isn’t it better if China draws down their supply first?

Sounds like they’re the cheapest game in town.

It was an Amdahl machine, it was their (Amdahl's) first machine capable of a Gigaflop. This was early 80s.

And it was not a single processor, it had many CPs. I don't remember exactly how many, my fuzzy recollection is that it was hundreds, not a few or a dozen. I don't remember them competing with anything Cray made.

I believe it used the same air-cooled processors, the 470, that was current in their mainframes at the time. The 470 was the competition for IBM 370 that ruled the world at that time. Air-cooling was a big deal, the IBM mainframes were water cooled and that added to expense and complexity.

The simulations are fascinating. I ask myself however if there was large impact greater than 6 feet wouldn’t we see a lot more infected.... anytime sometime goes to a grocery store or people out biking or running that otherwise self quarantined? We haven’t heard those stories yet have we?

We already have. Tons of people have no idea how or why they got infected.

Most people think a fomite is something the Orkin Man sprays for...

I doubt Jon got a check.

@Horace said in Another contrarian view: Does quarantine matter?:

I'm curious how "everybody wears a mask and gloves and washes their hands a lot" compares to quarantine.

Quarantine is better because it's far more enforceable. No way to make sure people wear masks for example, and that would really help.

Yikes. With an estimate that 44% of people were infected by people not yet showing symptoms.

Add to that asymptomatic people and people not tested do we think we might be closer to herd immunity than we understand?

    More from AEI: https://www.aei.org/research-products/report/estimating-the-true-number-of-chinas-covid-19-cases/

    Key Points

China’s COVID-19 figures are not arithmetically sensible. The Communist Party has deliberately made estimation difficult, but, outside of Wuhan city and Hubei province, cases are low by a factor of 100 or more.

In late January, Chinese media provided information about migrant outflow from Wuhan before quarantine. Using a lower number than theirs, then conservative figures for migrants’ infection rate and time in circulation before national lockdown, generates an estimate of 2.9 million cases.

This is partly due to China’s huge population. That population can also hide COVID-19 among tens of millions of respiratory illnesses. Along with harshly enforced censorship, the population can hide tens of thousands of deaths.

The time it would take paper applications to process would skyrocket if they didn't have the electronic option. I really don't see how this hurts.

on a typical day on the National Network, some 90,000 passengers are riding the trains. Today, that number is hovering around 4,000.
