@doctor-phibes said in The Misery Index: It's kind of funny that "the other BMI" is a misery index, too. And the "B" stands for "Barro." It's almost like "baro..." Coincidence? You decide.

Both groups suck. (Sorry, @Horace , I guess that makes me ignin't! ) But here's my litmus test: to what extent does your worldview accommodate contrasting opinions? How do you handle disagreement? That's why I'm much more likely yo hang with and vote for Republicans these days. Incredibly, they're on the whole more tolerant.

This country was based on the rejection of the “one religion” model. Indeed many of the colonists fled nations with such religious intolerance. Even with our guarantees of separation of church and state, such rhetoric can easily lead to sectarian divisions and even violence. That point was made by the great Edmund Burke who declared “Religious persecution may shield itself under the guise of a mistaken and overzealous piety.” Uh, that's not quite true.

I started 3D printing this turntable Friday. Just finished the final parts of the tonearm about an hour ago. I haven't even optimized the cartridge setup, just a rough alignment, set the tracking force at about 2 grams, a makeshift ground cable, adjusted the gains in the preamp, tested the speed, and played some Pink Floyd... Pretty impressed with it. Link to video

With present rate of COVID transmission in both Russia and Ukraine right now, there ain’t going to any invasion anytime soon. As well, Zelenskyie should just sit down, smoke a joint and stop talking about wanting Ukraine to join NATO. It ain’t gonna happen.

From Wiki: Project Veritas is an American far-right[16] activist group founded by James O'Keefe in 2010.[20] The group produces deceptively edited videos[15] of its undercover operations,[7] which use secret recordings[7] in an effort to discredit mainstream media organizations and progressive groups.[21][22] Project Veritas also uses entrapment[14] to generate bad publicity for its targets,[4] and has propagated disinformation[3] and conspiracy theories[30] in its videos and operations. And how is that any different than 60 Minutes, or CBS in general for that matter? Hell, politicians do it all the time in campaigns.

@lufins-dad said in The New Car Market: @mik said in The New Car Market: @lufins-dad said in The New Car Market: @jolly said in The New Car Market: Needs two things... A temporary waiver on some emissions categories, so that cars and trucks could be made with less chips. An automaker willing to step up and make a basic car in the U.S., without many bells and whistles, that could sell for less than $20K. Ideally, for around $18K. Not going to happen Why do you keep believing in American manufacturing? There area very few American manufacturers that build a quality product, but in general? Sorry… The more unionized the factory, the lower the quality. I think that was true some years ago, but American car makers have improved. Are they on par with Honda and Toyota? Not quite but much closer than they used to be. Had a 2000 Ford Taurus. Nice car, drove like a muscle car. Hit 50K miles and the electrical system died. Completely. Would have cost more than the car was worth to fix. Had a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. It had an evap code that was never resolved in 6 years. The evap system was smoked, double checked, triple checked, had various seals and parts replaced, and the code never went away. The damn thing also went through tie rods like I went through cigarettes... Worst car I ever had. Have a 2015 GMC Terrain. I have another evap code that no one can solve. I've already had to replace the transmission and numerous other pain in the ass repairs. Had a 1998 Toyota Tecel for 300,000 miles. Never had a frigging problem. Have a 2020 Honda Pilot. It has driven like a dream with 12K miles on it already. I am not buying an American car again unless it is a muscle car or a truck. I've had Lincoln town cars continuously since 1976. Some of then would have 300,000 miles on them by the time I sold them. Currently I have a 2011 (last year it was made) that has 350,000 plus miles on it other than tires and oil changes I've never had to spend a penny on any of them, and since the mid 90s have gotten around 27 mpg on the highway.

@mik said in Yes, he can be funny...: own very well. Washington, DC? I am a donor to and have worked closely with his High School (Duke Ellington School of the Arts). It's an incredible performing arts school with very talented faculty. They recently rebuilt their historic school and are planning a very special event around naming the performance hall after Dave Chappelle. Here is the letter I recently received about the event. Thank you again for your support of Duke Ellington School of the Arts. The theatre naming event honoring our most distinguished alumnus, Dave Chappelle, has been rescheduled for April 22, 2022. It’s been a busy year for Chappelle. He is currently traveling nationally and internationally, performing stand-up, and promoting his film projects, all while remaining committed to the school he calls home. This summer, Chappelle’s Pilot Boy Productions premiered an uplifting, yet-to-be-titled independent documentary that chronicles how Chappelle helped his small Ohio town deal with the fear and economic devastation of COVID-19, the horror of George Floyd's murder, and America's reckoning with deadly racism during the first summer of the pandemic. In October, Netflix released Chappelle’s stand-up special The Closer, which juxtaposes discrimination against Black Americans with that against non-Black members of the LGBTQ+ community. As the most watched comedy special in Netflix’s history, The Closer has garnered a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes while sparking a national debate around race, gender and “cancel culture.” As a learning institution that champions inclusivity, diversity, equity, and belonging, we decided to take this time, using Chappelle’s latest works as the impetus, to expand our Social Studies curriculum to include content related to political activism, civic engagement, arts activism, and the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality. Our objective is to uplift conversations around artistic freedom and artistic responsibility. We are extremely grateful for your sponsorship and look forward to your continued support.
