From the interwebs: "There is a new turbocharged BOXER engine that powers the Ascent, Outback, and Legacy. The new 2.4L turbo BOXER generates 260 horsepower and 277 lb. -ft. of torque on all three Subaru models."
Maybe it deserves a test drive. I let my subscription to Car and Driver lapse, so am a bit in the dark these days about new cars.

That test drive would have to be out of state on the Turnpike in PA...

My son (car nut with encyclopedic knowledge) corrected me after I posted it. The entry Mustang is a 4cyl.

I'm sorry, but you can "turbo" the hell out of a 4 cylinder and it's still a 4 cylinder.
Now all that said above about the Mustang is NOT true about my 2019 VW Jetta with a 1.4 liter turbo and auto transmission. That thing has terrible turbo lag. Don't ever expect to get out of anyone's way, at least not without 2 second's notice.

When I was looking to go down to 1 car (getting rid of the A6 and the 328) I drove that Jetta. Though nicely appointed, it was a dog when it came to performance. I've read that the Jetta GLI is a much better contender.

I'm looking at the Ford site, and I guess the 2.3L EcoBoost is the entry level.
"It’s a Mustang engine, so you know it packs a punch.
• 310 horsepower
• 350 lb.-ft. of torque*
• Turbocharging and direct injection
• Twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT)"Note, it doesn't say how many cylinders, presumably because it's a 4-banger.
Oh, and an automatic transmission is a cool $1600 extra.

Car wise? He’s still 11. Got a ways. He’ll likely not get his own car in high school unless I want to use it as a convenient excuse to upgrade mine.

0-60 is generally a poor metric, anyway. It’s very rare that you need to go from a standing position to 60mph in 7 seconds. 0-30? That’s a bit more practical. 0-20? Everyday...Those turbo 4s start slow and then catch it up on the backend of a level stretch. That lag is one of my main issues.
You're not necessarily wrong, but you're probably an edge case .
There's nothing stopping carmakers from making V6s. It's a very competitive, if they thought they could make more money - more would offer it.
The demographic of people who go smaller SUV + want good towing capacity, incline performance is probably small.
You'll likely have to look up-market, full-size SUV for what you want.
What I’d really like is a nice van. Karla’s absolutely dead set against that, though. She’s trying to balance responsibility with maybe a bit of a midlife crisis? She wants the features of a minivan on something that isn’t a minivan. These crossover SUV’s seem to fill the niche of neither, IMO. I get more practical trunk space and a larger and nicer interior in a sedan than a crossover SUV... A Camry or Avalon would be my second choice.
I think the compromise might be a midsized pickup.

How about an Odyssey EX-L with a flaming paint job?
For trunk space, the CR-V (crossover SUV) have almost twice the trunk space of an Avalon, maybe you want more storage area rather then more space on the vertical dimension?Srsly, if you to strap a baby seat in the cabin, preferably in the second row, or to seat four in general and still have lots of cargo area, a minivan like Odyssey is hard to beat.

@LuFins-Dad I’ve heard the Pilot is great. Not sure I get the 0-60 factor, will you be racing people at the red light?
We really like Honda, and buying new isn’t as different from used these days. We have an Accord and CR-V. Will probably sell one soon and get the van (or pilot), prob the van. For me the biggest factor now is being able to move my drivers seat back without hitting a car seat!

Not an Odyssey, but we are leaning towards a Honda Pilot. 3.5 Liter 6 -Cylinder that cuts 0-60 in 5.9 seconds... Not bad. Decent cargo space and a roof rack.
I still might break one of my rules, though. I normally always buy pre-owned (I like to get 2 years old with 20K miles on it) but we might actually purchase new. I'm only seeing a 10% difference between new and used and new is offering 0% for 60 Months...
Contender #2 is the Volkswagen Atlas. Anybody have any experience? @Klaus ?
The other contender is a Challenger Scat Pack Wide Body. 6.2L V8 that cuts 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Yeah, the kids will be cramped, but they'll have a blast....

She loves it.

If you go Honda (Odyssey or Pilot) - try to get the tier with the 10 speed Honda-homegrown transmission instead of the ZF 9-speed.
Honda’s on average are very reliable, but to the extent there are any issues, it’s more with the ZF transmission.
(I did a fair bit of research, was very close to buying an Odyssey).

Don't you have a 15-year-old low mileage Corolla? That would be perfect!
