A little over 4 weeks ago I found out my blood sugar was getting a little high and I was bordering on pre-diabetic, so I decided to A) Lose 35 lbs to get back to where I should be at to help my insulin sensitivity B) Develop better long term eating and hydration habits for the long term and not to ping pong right back… 3) Give my liver a vacation and a more relaxed workload going forward…

So 4 weeks ago I cut off the beer and whiskey, and switched to a semi-keto diet plan. All that I’ve had to drink over that time is water, coffee, 2 unsweetened iced teas, and 3 cans of this stevia flavored soda with no coloring, all clear… So far I’ve lost 15 pounds, and am generally feeling better. The biggest improvement that I’ve noticed is that I sleep much better. And maybe a little less stress?

Anyway, I likely have another 6-8 weeks to go, since I will probably want to go a little below my target as I transition from a weight loss mode to a maintenance mode…At any rate, off to a good start…

Thanks! The Stevia soda is odd. It tastes like Diet Coke, not my favorite, but okay for something carbonated and a small bit of caffeine… But the lack of coloring drives home how other senses affect taste. If I pour it in a glass, it tastes odd and a little watered down. Drinking it from a can? It tastes like Diet Coke… I swear it’s the visual look changing expectations, which affect the taste… Ever try a sip of root beer when you thought it was cola? Very different flavor…

The athletic NA beers are nice.

I’ve been alcohol free for a while now. 7 months maybe? Due to being on an antibiotic

I’ll give them a try, but the good ones still have high carb count, so until the weight goes down…

Nicely done. 15 in 4 weeks is yuge. Yeah, I make sure if I have wine with dinner to be up at LEAST three hours before bed. Otherwise you get the 3 AM wine wake-up call.

LD I'm a little behind you. In July I peaked at 232 pounds. I'm 6' tall so I "hide" it kind of well, but really I should be around 175-180 pounds. What's sad/funny is in 2005 after college I also found myself at 232 pounds and if you recall during the early PW days for me, 2005-2007 I went from 232 down to 175 over a span of 2 years. Of course, being in my mid-20s, no kids, marathon training... that helped.

Anyway, since July at 232 I'm down to 218 as of this morning. My goal is to be around 200 by the summer. My plan is genius... stop eating food or drinks after the kids go to bed. After our 3rd kid was born, my only free time was about 10-11pm so I'd watch a show and consume calories... easy math. I'm also trying to lift more but I have a long way to go before I'm at @mik or @horace's gymbro level.

Father-In-Law lost his foot in January to diabetes. Hearing the glucose numbers get up there was a big wake up call. It also made me realize that small little things that I was attributing to just getting older weren’t…

Still, I was pleased to look back after 2 weeks to know that I wasn’t addicted to the booze physically, and look back this week to see that I’m not addicted mentally, lol.

Not saying that I won’t have the occasional sip of whiskey, but not for another 8-12 weeks. What I am missing is the 2 times a week after work beers with a couple of guys at the pub. I’m hoping Jon’s Alliance Brews will help with that…

Two weeks later and another 12 pounds… I did go to the doctor last week and my blood sugar was on the lower side. Doc told me to bring it up a little. I told him I was being cautious because of the diabetes risk. He looked at me like I was crazy. “You? Diabetes?! You’re way too healthy, and tall!”

“Last month you told me the blood glucose was too high, and warned me about all the repercussions…”

“Bahhh, you’re fine… Still need to lose more weight, though…”

I did have a glass of whiskey with a tea on my birthday last week… I felt a cold coming on, so it was medicinal… Mothing since. My liver seems to have survived…

That’s great dude! Inspirational. I’ve had booze twice in the past few weeks and of course it tastes great but I feel so much better the next day when I’m eating clean. I’ll see if I can drop maybe 12 pounds before my birthday in May.
