Worst case, I return to driving as if CarPlay has not been introduced.
Simple after-market phone holder attached to the dashboard will do, like the good old days.
Hack, I have to do that from time to time anyway because CarPlay sometimes just refuse to work and I don’t feel like restarting the car or rebooting the phone just to make CarPlay work.

Seems doomed to fail. There’s no way the car companies are going to compete with the open ecosystems of Apple and Android and most customers simply won’t buy cars that don’t seamlessly integrate with their phones.

If you don't take it, it can only good happen.

That would have been my initial reaction as well, but then again Tesla does, according to the article, not support Carplay et al and consumers still buy it.

Yeah but people who buy teslas are already resigned to a bunch of trade offs. They’ve already decided they are interested in a very nonstandard car.

Not sure the (say) Honda CRV drivers are going to be of the same mindset.

I know my next car will have wireless CarPlay.

              Totally agree.

I remember having a similar argument with Loki about in-car navigation systems. There was no way Audi or Lexus was going to keep up with Google. Just was never in the cards.

My 2014 accord doesn't have it and I don't miss it. I have had some nightmare tech support experiences with my mom, trying to get her luxury vehicle to pair with her iPhone. And the process with rental cars is also always unpleasant.

                  Education is extremely important.

I didn’t miss it before I had it either.

                    Same with a backup camera.

I don't need it unless I'm traversing an area I don't know well. I'm seldom in a car long enough to care about what music is playing. I usually listen to NPR anyway. Although on last year's rental of a Cadillac XT4 it was pretty cool because the screen went all across the dash.
