Though at some point markets and inflation will force his hand.

I think folks would forgive prices not decreasing - but increasing prices? - not so much especially when the layoffs come - so the twin pincers of higher prices and increased unemployment might shake even some of the faithful. Follow that with a stock market decline...

His winning margin wasn't from the faithful, it was from swing voters who voted for a better economy. Maga is toast if this stuff all backfires in ways they feel.

If you’re Canada do you have any choice but to invest in more pipelines to Pacific ports?

If this doesn’t resolve itself within 4 weeks, sure.

Trump doesn’t want to resolve it. It’s pretty clear from his comments that fentanyl is there for the legal justification but autarky is the goal. Though at some point markets and inflation will force his hand.

Autarky. An interesting and, for me at least, a disconcerting thought. The US would need unfettered sovereign access to a multitude of natural resources including fresh water to attain that goal.

Contrary to what John Bolton has said that Trump is incapable of a grand strategy, I cannot entirely rule out that a malevolent and imperialist design is what motivates Trump’s thinking.

I remember when Trump threatened Amazon with increased postal costs. At the time, over 80% of the deliveries in our area were via USPS. Now, 100% of them are by Amazon.

So, Trump is responsible for keeping USPS costs down?

Even if it does. Why stay exposed to the next petty tyrant?

It’s not like his base is against this. They’re watching fox with one hand in their pants and the other in their bag of potato chips. This could happen again post Trump.

Shopify is big in the US, is this just another businessman publicly buttering up TFM?

Sniffs as sensible. Written by a man not invested in proving himself as if he's a child in a schoolyard forging an identity standing up to a bully.

Anyway, posturing about standing up to bullies is very cheap. We'll see how this goes.

Or, maybe a trade war ends well for Canada in the long run. I guess that's the notion? Or are we really at a "death before dishonor" crossroads?

Now, what is actually going to happen?

Canada tightens up the border and tariff goes away. Mexico is going to be more interesting...By declaring the cartels terrorist organizations, it means we can drop a SEAL team into the country, if we choose.

What about the part where no business leader would plan for an integrated supply chain anymore?

And what’s actually happening at the Canadian border that’s causing such a mess in the US? That’s still not very clear to people. Hard to address a problem without knowing what it is.

                                          That is my hope.
