I know you're probably "just joking", but just so you know - slavery is a brutal institution that strips individuals of their freedom, dignity, and humanity, reducing them to mere property subjected to exploitation and abuse. Honestly it seems like a topic worthy of a national holiday. I don’t m mean the specific events in Texas of 1865, but rather commemorating the end of chattel slavery in the US. It’s impossible to imagine any larger step toward the Declaration of Independence’s ideal of ‘All Men are Created Equal”

Historically, Juneteenth wasn't a set date. If we want one, let's start one on its own instead of piggybacking off of something over half the country still doesn't understand.

I’ve always thought the date of the Emancipation Proclamation should be the date for the holiday, but I guess competing with New Year’s makes it a no go.

Ending chattel slavery. It started even before the founding and culminated in the mid 1860s.

I don’t see how it matters. This anchors it to the event the way Washington’s birthday anchors ‘presidents day’ to presidents.

I'm sure there is some celebration of the event, but for the most part it sounds like another civil rights march.

We've come a long way but we have a long way to go.

Swell, but to make me pay any attention to the holiday, I'd like to hear a little more "Thanks to the 400,000+ (estimates vary) Union soldiers who died to make juneteenth happen.
