I know you're probably "just joking", but just so you know - slavery is a brutal institution that strips individuals of their freedom, dignity, and humanity, reducing them to mere property subjected to exploitation and abuse. It has historically perpetuated systemic oppression and generational trauma, leaving a lasting legacy of injustice and inequality.

Maybe next time you can think twice about "joking" about slavery.

    Education is extremely important.

I do not recognize either the holiday or any imagined or conjured significance it unlikely might have upon my national identity. In fact, it is a quite irrelevant commemoration in my view.

Honestly it seems like a topic worthy of a national holiday. I don’t m mean the specific events in Texas of 1865, but rather commemorating the end of chattel slavery in the US. It’s impossible to imagine any larger step toward the Declaration of Independence’s ideal of ‘All Men are Created Equal”

I'd agree, but cynical me does not think that was the impetus behind it becoming a holiday.

Historically, Juneteenth wasn't a set date. If we want one, let's start one on its own instead of piggybacking off of something over half the country still doesn't understand.

I’ve always thought the date of the Emancipation Proclamation should be the date for the holiday, but I guess competing with New Year’s makes it a no go.

Ending chattel slavery. It started even before the founding and culminated in the mid 1860s.

I don’t see how it matters. This anchors it to the event the way Washington’s birthday anchors ‘presidents day’ to presidents.

I'm sure there is some celebration of the event, but for the most part it sounds like another civil rights march.

We've come a long way but we have a long way to go.

Swell, but to make me pay any attention to the holiday, I'd like to hear a little more "Thanks to the 400,000+ (estimates vary) Union soldiers who died to make juneteenth happen.

                                    And of course Thanks Republicans.

                                          Agreed.

Although as @Mik said it wasn't the impetus... it was an unlikely holiday until George Floyd and the BLM wave of social pressure made it an automatic Congressional vote. I know you know that, btw.

Anyway... I took my kids to the zoo for the holiday. The only impact the holiday has is it gives me a free 8 hours of paid holiday time at work (and a few stupid emails from management). The zoo was busy, and yes I avoided making any jokes here about which zoo exhibit we visited first.
