Can we discuss the Tik Tok Bill?

Agreed. It is far too generic and wide-reaching. If they banned Tik Tok, I could see that. But the RESTRICT Act is far broader than that.

It's way over the line. As for getting rid of Tik Tok, in time, something will replace it - Pinterest is adding videos - and Facebook has "reels" that serve a similar function.
The issue for all social media is pretty much the same, i.e. it could be possible for people to control messaging and encourage behaviors. Still, that is just as true for FB, Twitter and others.
For me, Tik Tok is a preferred social media to most others. I saw a lot more about what was happening post the Floyd riots thanks to TT. There's a lot of fascinating stuff that floats up to one's screen over time.

There also appears to be language that would allow government officials to access your video devices.

The bill itself might suck, I’ve not yet looked into it.
But of course we should ban TikTok unless and until China divests of it fully.
Here’s the case for it.

There is no doubt that TikTok needs banned or divested. But the rest of this is just an obscene power grab. Warner’s proven himself unfit for office with this bill, and in tech heavy Northern VA (they say that every packet of information on the internet goes through servers in Loudoun County), he may have just sank his career.

@LuFins-Dad Yes I've also read that I think 80 percent of worldwide internet traffic goes through the data centers in Loudon County.

70% of “The World’s” internet traffic. I’m pretty sure the world includes other countries.

Yeah sorry it's 70%, allegedly. And that video call between Melbourne and Tanzania? Who knows... if the technology used is leveraging an AWS CloudFront Edge location, partnered network, and/or somehow has data pulled into the AWS global ecosystem for redundancy or latency or blah blah blah...I could see why the data might be routed (even if as a backup) through the AWS East region (Northern Virginia) at some point.

70% of “The World’s” internet traffic. I’m pretty sure the world includes other countries.
That's not what you said. It's right up there a few lines up, did you forget saying it?
they say that every packet of information on the internet goes through servers in Loudoun County
Are you going to admit this was an over-estimation or are we still going to play games?
I also said earlier that I had misspoke and meant US web traffic. Are we just going to pick and choose what responses were given?
I'm not arguing with you that a shitload of internet traffic goes through Loudoun. I'm well aware of why that is. I only had issue with "every packet of information" which is clearly not true.
Personally I'm surprised the packets of information can even fit in the series of tubes, all of which are planted under the Wegman's in Loudon County.

Yes, because when you're on a video chat between Melbourne and Tasmania, obviously it has to be run through America Online in Ashburn first.
I meant in the US, but as 89th points out, quite a bit of the World Wide Web goes through loudoun.
Well, sure, it's the internet's I-95. But not for other countries who are accessing other servers.
