Amid Virus Surge, Republicans Abruptly Urge Masks Despite Trump’s Resistance
Masks became a political cause for some in the early months of the pandemic. A growing set of Republican leaders are suddenly pushing Americans to wear them.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/01/us/coronavirus-masks.html
‘...
Vice President Mike Pence has abruptly begun regularly wearing and recommending a mask. Gov. Doug Ducey of Arizona, facing an uncontrolled outbreak of the coronavirus in his state, made a plea this week: “Arm yourself with a mask.” And Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming tweeted a photograph of her father, the former vice president, wearing a fleece vest, cowboy hat and pale blue surgical mask covering his face. “Dick Cheney says WEAR A MASK,” she wrote, adding the hashtag “#realmenwearmasks.”On Tuesday, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Senate Health Committee, appealed to the president himself: Wear a mask, Mr. Alexander implored, and end a dangerous partisan divide over the practice, with some Republicans shunning masks because Mr. Trump has declined to wear them.

Trump is immobilized. His great psychological bugbear is the fear of incurring blame; he is incapable of it. He's not so much refusing to wear a mask for political reasons as a matter of principle, but because he is faced with a situation he can't fix, or appear to be fixing, and for which he is being blamed -- rightly or wrongly.
He's frozen.
It is significant that Pence is wearing a mask.

Trump said yesterday he would have no problem wearing a mask in certain circumstances.

Nobody wants to hear that. It doesn't fit the media narrative.

It’s not his mask wearing per se that’s important. It’s the sizeable portion of his base that is hostile to the idea. That group could have been much smaller than it is today had he adopted the right attitude early and consistently.
But he didn't! Now he needs to change their minds! He needs to provide informed leadership! What his base believes isn't carved in stone.

True but more non mask wearers are likely anti Trump and are more responsible for the spread.

@Mik What does "frequently tested and safe" mean? And if you believe everything coming out of the White House just because it's what you want to hear, then I don't know what to tell you.
Sorry, that was not directed at you Cats, but the collective you.

Then I said: But he didn't! Now he needs to change their minds! He needs to provide informed leadership!
I forgot to add: I think he cannot do that, because that would require admitting he was wrong, and that is the very thing he cannot do, because in his mind that woujld be leaving himself open to blame. He can't go forward, but he can't go back because events are overrunning him. He's stuck.

Right there... The majority of the folks I am seeing not wearing masks are definitely not Trump supporters.
