      All Domestic U.S. Flights Grounded

The Federal Aviation Administration early Wednesday ordered airlines to pause all domestic departures until 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time to allow the agency to restore a critical system that alerts pilots and crew to safety advisories and other information for flights.

United Airlines Holdings Inc. said early Wednesday that it had temporarily delayed all domestic flights due to the issue. American Airlines Group Inc. said in a tweet the FAA outage was affecting all carriers and all flights, but didn’t provide details. “We sincerely appreciate your patience as they work to resolve this,” the company said.

Southwest Airlines Co. warned customers on Twitter to check their flight status on the airline’s app and website. “We’re closely monitoring a data issue with the FAA that may impact the start of operations today,” it warned.

Flight data specialist Flightaware early Wednesday showed a rising number of delays and cancellations across the U.S. It showed approximately 1,360 delayed flights departing or arriving in the U.S., and a further 103 canceled as of 7:14 a.m. ET. It wasn’t immediately clear what proportion of those flights were affected by the outage. Cirium, an aviation data provider, said there were a total of 21,464 flights scheduled to depart airports in the U.S. Wednesday. Those flights account for about 2.9 million available seats.

Watching that this morning. This critical system doesn’t have redundancy?

If it saves a single human life, we need to keep those planes grounded indefinitely.

Good point. After the Southwest debacle, it looks like the entire air transportation system is just a bunch of stuff kludged together.

It works fine, until it doesn't.

                            Two thoughts:

                            Any chance it’s a hack?

Imagine being a poor southwest passenger from December who was finally leaving on his rebooked flight today…

Of course, FAA is saying it's not. Of course.

Perhaps the cause is a bit more mundane:

Since Schumer has a history of devoted prayer, and I have no reason to think that this was a political stunt, I can only assume that he has continued his reverent tradition.
