All Domestic U.S. Flights Grounded
The Federal Aviation Administration early Wednesday ordered airlines to pause all domestic departures until 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time to allow the agency to restore a critical system that alerts pilots and crew to safety advisories and other information for flights.
United Airlines Holdings Inc. said early Wednesday that it had temporarily delayed all domestic flights due to the issue. American Airlines Group Inc. said in a tweet the FAA outage was affecting all carriers and all flights, but didn’t provide details. “We sincerely appreciate your patience as they work to resolve this,” the company said.
Southwest Airlines Co. warned customers on Twitter to check their flight status on the airline’s app and website. “We’re closely monitoring a data issue with the FAA that may impact the start of operations today,” it warned.
Flight data specialist Flightaware early Wednesday showed a rising number of delays and cancellations across the U.S. It showed approximately 1,360 delayed flights departing or arriving in the U.S., and a further 103 canceled as of 7:14 a.m. ET. It wasn’t immediately clear what proportion of those flights were affected by the outage. Cirium, an aviation data provider, said there were a total of 21,464 flights scheduled to depart airports in the U.S. Wednesday. Those flights account for about 2.9 million available seats.

Watching that this morning. This critical system doesn’t have redundancy?
Good point. After the Southwest debacle, it looks like the entire air transportation system is just a bunch of stuff kludged together.
It works fine, until it doesn't.

If it saves a single human life, we need to keep those planes grounded indefinitely.
Include bird lives.

“At around 8:50 a.m., [the FAA] announced that the ground stop had been lifted and that normal air traffic operations were resuming gradually across the country.”

Two thoughts:
Any chance it’s a hack?
Imagine being a poor southwest passenger from December who was finally leaving on his rebooked flight today…

Dems have control of the Senate when the last FAA chief quit. Don't know what is taking them so long to confirm the next FAA chief.

Maybe they're praying for inspiration?
-
@George-K, the timeline doesn't work. The last FAA chief resigned in March 2022. The picture you posted of Schumer praying was taken in June 2020.
@Axtremus thanks for the timeline. The photo was tended as an illustration, not history. Since Schumer has a history of devoted prayer, and I have no reason to think that this was a political stunt, I can only assume that he has continued his reverent tradition.

A preliminary FAA review of last week’s outage of the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system determined that contract personnel unintentionally deleted files while working to correct synchronization between the live primary database and a backup database. ...
