                    I am guess that the moderate Republican and moderate Democrat have more in common with each other than the moderate Republican and extreme Republican.

                    No reason it would not work, but like @jon said, if they agreed, then probably a primary by an extreme member

                                        Probably had to promise to leave the Capitol doors unlocked after every Dem presidential victory.
