@Jolly said in Should Pelosi Visit Taiwan?:

    What do you think?

Speaker Pelosi should do it, because:

    1. We, the USA, is supposed to be the beacon of democracy, and Taiwan is a democracy. We should support democracies.

    2. We are the USA, we don't let 3rd party country tell us where our representatives can or cannot visit.

If Taiwan don't want Speaker Pelosi there, or if Speaker Pelosi have other reasons to not visit Taiwan at this time, fine. Otherwise we should not let the CCP tell our Speaker of the House where she can or cannot visit.

Now you, @Jolly, what do you think.

I think until we splash a Chinese fighter, it doesn't make much difference one way or the other.

Without saying it, Taiwan hopes that the visit takes place.

It is exactly what @bachophile said - if she does not go now, then it looks like the US is bowing to the wishes of mainland China.

An airplane believed to be carrying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has landed on the island of Taiwan after weeks of international speculation and threats of retaliation from the Chinese Communist Party.

              believed to be carrying?

(CNN)US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taipei on Tuesday, marking a significant show of support for Taiwan despite China's threats of retaliation over the visit.

While she has no choice but to go now, I don’t think she should have ever started this shitshow. The Department of State should be making these visits along with the Chief Executive. Not the Speaker of the House. Foreign Diplomacy is not her job and she does not have the training or the authority to accomplish anything…

Another argument for term levels. Nancy has been unhinged for at least four or five years.

@LuFins-Dad @Mik @Jolly , I do not recall seeing you object when US Senators and House Representatives visited Ukraine or Georgia (Eastern Europe) or Israel or or Japan or Taiwan (Sen. Rick Scott visited Taiwan as recently as July 8th) in the recent past.

What are the key differences that motivate your objection to Pelosi's visit now?

In my (biased) opinion, not going to Taiwan by Rep. Pelosi would have been signaling to mainland China that all they have to do is shout and the US will back down. I am glad she went.

China is the bully of east Asia. You have to stand up to bullies I think.

I'm beginning to think it might have been a good idea. China's response was to fire off a few missiles we already knew they had. Big whoop.

But now that everyone signaled their position let's let this settle back down.
