I just can't believe that freaking great big batteries are the future.
"Battery" as a concept is very broad, generally an energy storage device that can supply power using its stored energy. It does not even need to be "rechargeable."
The Matrix imagines a world where humans used as "batteries."
Even after we figure out miniaturized room-temperature nuclear fusion, it would still be a "battery," and that may not be a bad future.
Have you been spending time with people from California by any chance?

Well, I did have dinner with Horace once.

Maybe hydrogen fuel car?
I know that there are many obstacle to overcome with safety, pressure tanks, etc. but could be a way to go.
Hydrogen is easy to get, and unlimited.

Maybe I am a mind reader (LOL) but this article showed up after I had posted above.

@taiwan_girl I remember reading that Toyota is really interested in hydrogen as a fuel. I was aware of them looking at it for fuel cells, but not as something to be used in an internal combustion engine.

Hydrogen has to be the long-term solution. Batteries are disgusting great chemical things, whose main benefit appears to be making people feel better about themselves.

Maybe not so long

The electric infrastructure is awful. Few people want to plan their trips around where they can charge up their cars. And that's not to say anything about the fact that, once you find a spot, it'll take you at least 20 minutes to "gas up."
I can see hydrogen as a much more practical alternative. I wonder what the retro-fit to traditional gas stations would be like. Presumably, easier than building new charging stations de novo.

I have to admit, I worry slightly about people with, shall we say, "below-average" technical skills and safety-awareness tinkering about with compressed hydrogen. It leaks really, really easily, and it ignites even more so, and when burning it has no visible flame. If you manage to make it explode, well....it's loud, and full of energy!
