I’d like to get a rowing machine. Maybe in a year or two. My biggest issue is finding the time and then fighting off the snack/drink demons at 10pm when I finally get a minute to myself!

My neighbor has a rowing machine he said to try before you buy as it’s a great workout but can also make your butt sore if you don’t have the correct posture.

Love swimming, it’s such a great workout and the waterproof headphones makes it fun to listen to music while swimming.

Back when I was a regular at a club in Chicago, they had a former Olympic rower who taught the classes on the rowing machine. She got me to move from doing heavy pulls to lighter tension and faster pulls with better form.

The interesting thing about rowing is that if you have proper technique, only something like 25% of the power comes from your arms.

The most well known indoor machine is the "Concept 2". From what I have heard/read, the fly setting should be at around 4-5 and the stroke every minute should be somewhere around 20-22.

I usually just watch Asian dramas while rowing. LOL The concept 2 had a holder for an Ipad or similar. Makes the time go quickly.

I'm starting to change my cardio sessions to HIIT - one minute normal, 30 seconds fast and furious. It supposedly has a brain preserving effect. I'll see if i can find the article.

When I have to "scroll" to select my birth year when filling out a form, it's starting to becoming insulting. And yes, I know we have longer-scrollers here.

I worked out today, but my body was already unhappy with me for having hoisted wet mulch bags all day yesterday in a very rare day of yardwork. It shows that no matter how much time i put in on the machines, they don't work ALL the muscles. I'll have to look into adding some dumbbell work.

It's a trap bar. You stand inside it to do deadlifts. Usually they're closed on both sides. I use on at my gym. I find it much easier to lift with my legs rather than back with the trap bar.

I recently started doing real pull-ups and dips. Previously I only did the assisted kind out of fear that I'd injure my shoulder (torn rotator cuff in 22).

I've been trying to do 3 sets of 5 (up from 3 sets of 3). I can do that with dips, today I hit 5-5-4 on pull-ups. Still need to improve my form though.

Speaking of trap bars, a guy at my gym this morning had FIVE forty-five pound plates on each side of a trap bar and did a dead lift with it.

                              That’s 495 lbs.

You see things like that. It’s impressive, but I have to wonder how that much stress is going to affect them later on.

@Mik I agree. I dont think that the human body is designed of evolved to be able to handle some of that stuff. I think of US football. Having a 300 pound guy running at you full speed and jumping on you cannot be good for either person.

As Clint Eastwood noted, "man's gotta know his limitations" - and Clint has lifted weights for most of his life.

The trap bar is some protection of my L4/L5 issues which is there is nothing between them two discs. I'm trying to do more leg work. I do serious lifting with bench - and leg press - but much more modest weight with the trap bar. Right now, I'm doing about 150 lbs. Even after I get a bit more time with the bar, I don't think I'll be doing anything too silly.

I do 3 sets of 10 of 155. I should put the extra 10 on each side and do my once-and-future body weight of 175. I’ll probably do that next time.

My squats are 315, also 3x10. I should add a tad to that to do 2x my body weight. I’ll do that next time too.
