There’s a Lucid dealer in a high-end mall here. They look pretty sweet. But I doubt I’d consider an electric car for my next purchase in 2027 timeframe (probably send the boy to college with the Mazda).

It's not just "battery technology" but also the "charging infrastructure" more broadly. I see myself sticking with gas/hybrid for quite a while yet.

Same, both to Jon and Ax.

I'm guessing in the next few years there will be a large anti-battery movement considering the electricity has to come from "somewhere" and the battery uses rare or mined earth materials from "somewhere".

It is nice they made progress.

This isn't yet the progress that beats internal combustion.

I looked up how long a Tesla car can hold its change (if you just let the car sit there doing nothing) and came away with this:

It loses 1%~2% of its charge per day.

So you charge a new Tesla to 100%, you unplug it, and just leave it there. After 100 days, the battery charge will have all dissipated. (And supposedly you're going to have a lot of other problems as a consequence of letting the battery run down to zero.)

Older Tesla cars (older batteries) will likely run out of charge sooner, maybe a couple of months.

So ... how does this compare to gas engines? How bad will it get if you let a gasoline car with a full tank of gas sit in a garage for two months to 100 days?

Serbia has withdrawn the exploration licences of Anglo-Australian mining company Rio Tinto following weeks of protests over plans for a lithium mine.

"All permits were annulled... we put an end to Rio Tinto in Serbia," Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Thursday.

The decision comes just weeks ahead of Serbia's general election in April.

                https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2025-04-22/unpacking-catl-s-five-minute-ev-charging-video

Today, both CATL and BYD claim to have batteries that can charge electric vehicles in as little as five minutes. However, CATL raised the stakes earlier this week in Shanghai when it revealed that the 320-mile range of its new Shenxing battery is around 70 miles longer than BYD’s claimed 250-mile range, and it can charge that range in 5 minutes. By contrast, Tesla's Superchargers are only capable of providing 200 miles of range in around 15 minutes.

Second rental of an EV. Against my will. I reserved a standard car. They gave me a Ford Mach E (mustang branded).

Probably trying to get rid of it, as I was renting in LA and returning in Sandy Eggo.

It drives well and more like a regular car than the Tesla with the auto-brake like regeneration. I had no issues finding stuff but the boy was in the car with me so I could ask him to figure out the defroster or whatever.

Couldn’t avoid a charge though. As I write this I’m at a Starbucks as the ‘fast charger’ charges my car for the next 30-40m. I still think these are only acceptable if you have a charger in your garage and never drive out of range.

Fucking hell. I get back the car and it had only charged from 23% to 46% in 41 minutes.

That’ll tie me over until I leave tomorrow morning, but I’ll still pay an exorbitant fee upon return.

Luckily I've avoided EVs for every rental I've done so far. Wouldn't know shit about fuck for how to use them or charge them or whatever.

Turns out there’s a slow charger at my hotel. It’ll be full by the time I leave at 5am.

That's doesn't seem right. I think those "superchargers" are much quicker than that. #shrug.

Literally never again will I accept one of these.

My charging cost was reasonable. But it finished charging around 10 and charged me an ‘idle fee’ which was more on an hourly basis than the charging fee.

I doubt I would have paid $50 had I returned it half full.

I wouldn't count on the slow charger to fill it overnight. My friend has a plug-in in his garage and it only charges like 40 miles a night. Not ready for prime time.

Yep. It stopped charging at 75%. It was 73% by the time I got to Avis.

I may well get hit with their exorbitant refill fee anyway.

I think EVs explain the rise of the godawful Buc-ee's. It takes half an hour to get out of there.

Dont hate me but I agree with this. LOL. On public charging stations, it is unfair to take up a spot that you no longer need. Same as if someone filled their car with gas, and then went off to a restaurant, leaving their car in front of the petrol pump.

I think it makes sense in general but should it really be more per unit of time than the charge itself? Also it should vary by time of day. No one was coming to charge from 10pm-4am.

Isn't that what they did? Charge you USD$30 for 7 hours of idle? About USD$4.28/hour.

Sorry you have have a bad experience with EV. When I have had one, I have had a pretty good experience.
