Yes, but you’re not wildly impaired and bored. Bad combination.

        https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/20/us/politics/republicans-trump-greenland.html

A small but growing group of Republicans in Congress is expressing openness to President Trump’s increasingly explicit push to acquire Greenland, along with his desire to punish European allies who resist the idea.

... with the president stepping up his threats and showing no sign of backing down, Republicans across the ideological spectrum are increasingly finding ways to defend or justify his threats — or embrace them altogether.

          @Axtremus Is this a surprise?

(I have to admit that I was initially surprised that the Republicans so easily "rolled over" for some of President Trumps more outrageous ideas, but now I am surprised if any actually stand up to him.

I suppose it will depend on what happens to the 2026 elections. If the Republics get beat very badly, then there may be more willing to stand up.

Not a surprise to me. It has been very obvious to me, for a long time, that the Republican Party has capitulated to Trump. Any former Republicans who stood up to Trump are just that, former (or retiring) Republicans.

To me it distilled who was in it for power vs principle. The power folks are obvious...folks like Rubio, Cruz, and many others. Who would've thought you'd have a power republican president opposed by people like Bush, McCain, Romney, Cheney, Murkowski, Collins, Pence, Bolton........

I don't really think Bolton will ever weigh in on the anti-power side of any real equation. Nor Cheney. Cheney was captured by his daughter, and changed due to that affiliation. As many do.

Cheney’s more complicated I think. Yes they went after his daughter. (Trump went after Cruz’s wife too). But they also went after ‘the neocons’ of which he was a poster child. Trump made Jolly agree with my long held position about the Iraq war his base go against the Iraq war in both practice and principle. This was Cheney’s signature career accomplishment starting as DoD Sec in the 90s and even chairman of the house armed services committee before that.

He was also a Paul Ryan fiscal conservative.

MAGA’s treatment of his daughter may have been sufficient on its own, but Cheney’s aversion to Trump is overdetermined.

The retcon that has occurred amongst a large number of "conservatives" regarding Iraq is something to behold.

                    I was only joking

It was funny to see all these maga types come around to my long held position about the war.

That was arguably the number one political point of contention in the first decade of TNCR.

I’m likely the least educated of anyone here, but I had this wild thought: Does Putin hold anything over your U.S. president? If so, could Russia benefit in any way, like if your president actually acquired Greenland?

Sorry I forgot a few highlights from the speech:

                              • We have a weapon we can't talk about but it disabled Venezuela's weapons so they couldn't fire at us
                              • "Without us, right now you'd all be speaking German and a little Japanese perhaps. After the war, we gave Greenland back to Denmark. How stupid were we? But how ungrateful are they now?"

Only Putin, Trump and possibly a select few in their respective inner circles would know. If there is anything, I am confident it would involve Russian mob money laundering rather than women of any age group.

If so, could Russia benefit in any way, like if your president actually acquired Greenland?

Only if it resulted in the dissolution of NATO and possibly the EU. Events of the past hour however indicate neither of those are going to happen so, no, Russia would receive zero benefit.

Yeah, and he cancelled the tariffs he said he wouldn't cancel.
