Schumer just did a thing. On the senate floor he offered a compromise. Reopen the government with a temporary extension of the ACA subsidies (which he describes as extending current law). Then create a bipartisan subgroup to negotiate something long term to address health care costs.

If you don't take it, it can only good happen.

Stay the course. The additional subsidies should die. Of course the Trump tax cuts should have too.

The shutdown will be over by next Friday…

It’s affecting the NFL. Fans that bought tickets for the away games can’t get there, and it’s causing massive disruptions for the media and broadcast crews.

Seems obvious that widespread air travel disruptions are a hard line that politics can not cross.

It also seems likely, if not quite obvious, that Trump is such an outsized figure in all political happenings, that he’ll mostly get blamed for it. regardless of what a more nuanced take might be.

One side wants to open the government. the other side is holding their breath until they get what they want, contrary to what they voted for in establishing an expiration for the additional subsidies.

Coincidentally there was a piece on COVID fraud being prosecuted on Full Measure this morning. One Minnesota group scammed 250 million. We really need to quit paying for pandemic related stuff.

The senators who voted for the deal are a surprise. They took a deal that was offered a month ago and put the US through this wholly unnecessary trauma for no good end.

Well they did get a promise for a vote on healthcare which wasn’t offered last time.

Isn’t that always the case though? Quite literally all of the shutdown battles have been won by the side seeking the clean CR. Until this year that was always the Dems. This year it was the GOP. Maybe they’ll internalize it now.

He, and Jon Stewart, are forgetting something. Fighting the “good fight” and opposing Trump at all costs is great politics in California and Massachusetts. States where Dem control is solid. But in purple states like PA, NH, NV, and Maine? You need crossover support. You need independents and even some Republican support. So you need to show some ability to compromise and actually legislate. Kaine in particular needed to get Northern Virginians back to work. Remember that specific polling of public sector labor unions (FFS, how do they even exist?) showed the majority supported this deal over three weeks ago. It even caused a split with the Dem aligned labor unions.
