One opinion on the current state of the "GOP" candidates.

    QUOTE
The first Republican presidential debate on Aug. 23 revealed three categories of candidates: a couple who might be sensible pragmatists, a couple others who might be sensible if they weren’t trying to contort themselves into ruthless conservatives, and a third group in hot pursuit of the fringiest elements of the GOP.

The most sensible candidates don’t always win national elections.

Many voters value performance over substance or want somebody who makes them feel good rather than promising responsible governance. ....... it’s likely the GOP nominee will be a bomb-thrower rather than a Reaganite establishmentarian.

    Normal:
    Nikki Haley
    Asa Hutchinson

    Semi Normal:
    Chris Christie
    Doug Burgum

    Abnormal:
    Mike Pence
    Ron DeSantis
    Tim Scott
    Vivek Ramaswamy

As a random Republic voter, how would you categorize the candidates?

I actually didn't watch the whole thing. I have an extraordinarily busy lifestyle, and sometimes politics must take a back seat.

I've already posted my opinions about what I did see. Ramaswamy was cringier than I was hoping. However I can imagine that if that were the first time hearing his message, as I imagine it was for many viewers, it could have been compelling. My expectations were for the message and more maturity. He doesn't need to be 38 and also a kid acting like he's on a playground. I expect him to turn the maturity up a notch in the future debates. He's not a Trump character, unable to switch gears based on feedback and reflection. As for the other candidates, I thought Haley commanded the stage well and was effective when she tried to put Ramaswamy in his place. Christie can get the conservative never Trumper vote, fine, but he seemed like more of a comedian than a president. Pence is a plastic product of some kind.

      Education is extremely important.

I would not categorize them in that rather stupid hierarchy.

Ron DeSantis and Tim Scott carry the highest favorability rating of any candidates including the Democrats. I wouldn’t call that abnormal.

My understanding (maybe incorrect) was that the labels related to how close to the center they were.

Nobody normal is going to want to be President. It's a self-selecting freak show.

                Seen on Twitter:

                Debate Summary:

                • Nikki Haley was the least bad
                • Vivek Ramaswamy is insufferable
                • Ron DeSantis is the most awkward person alive
                • Mike Pence might as well be in a Witness Protection Program
                • Chris Christie is preaching to the wrong choir

                You’re all caught up.

The DNC didn't like any of them, huh?
