I've always thought our slander and libel laws should revert back to an earlier and much more narrow definition.

I'm also in favor of not releasing an individual's name who is charged with a crime. That name can be released after trial or plea bargain.

People should be secure in themselves and their possessions. That includes their reputation.

I always thought that if you were not a public figure before being charged with any crime, then you should be considered a private person. But social media probably complicates all of that.

I find the whole "Public Figure" narrative to have been distorted beyond all recognition and it is now abused. I hate case law and judicial decisions based on legal precedent.

Like David Hogg, Kyle has worked hard to parlay his 15m of fame into something more, pretty actively seeking continued access to the spotlight.

But there should be a dividing line. At what point do they become famous, because there is no alternative? Hogg actively courted the spotlight when he was a nobody. Kyle was famous before he even knew how to spell spotlight.

Rittenhouse didn't make himself a public person, Hogg wanted to become a public spokesman.

We need an adaptation of The Hunger Games with Rittenhouse, Hogg, and Greta Thunberg.

Perhaps in the beginning but certainly since his trial he’s been trying pretty hard.

True, but the alleged slander occurred BEFORE that.

You think? I would think calling him a murderer prior to his acquittal wouldn’t meet the threshold of defamation.

@Doctor-Phibes and @jon-nyc that's true. However, Biden's video, talking about white supremacists and showing Rittenhouse was before his acquittal.

Ultimately, I guess it boils down, as I said, as to whether he is a private citizen or a public figure.

This kid is going to need bodyguards for the next decade, at least. He is being prevented from going to college by the raving lunatics, and he has zero other options of getting a job. @jon-nyc and others criticize him for embracing a public role, but what other choice does the kid have? Seriously? How else does he survive the next year? 2? 10?

@LuFins-Dad most of that seems either unlikely or heavily exaggerated.

He’d be among friends at hillsdale. Millions actually think he’s a hero. Surly many of those would hire him. Not a big tech firm with a global brand, but local small and medium sized businesses would pick him up.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find a gun shop anywhere in the US that wouldn’t hire him. (Ok my turn to exaggerate)

All by embracing the status being pushed at him. He can’t go on to be a police officer or a first responder (the path he was on), he can’t choose to go to Michigan or Penn State, he can’t take a job at Starbucks or Old Navy. His options are MUCH more limited in scope and each of the opportunities you listed is based on embracing his role in the current culture war.
