Yes, that thought really stuck with me too. Losing a parent like that is just such an awful thing to happen to a kid.

She stayed at my place in 2007. I had a huge piano party when Elena was playing Carnegie. She wanted desperately to come but couldn’t swing it financially. I offered her my guest room which made it possible. It was odd meeting her for the first time at baggage claim in LGA and taking a cab back to my place. That was when it was still a little odd to meet online people in real life, and this wasn’t just meeting for coffee or a piano party, she was staying the weekend.
I returned a visit the next year, I had a conference in St. Louis and went to see her first. She already had cancer and was bald when I went to see her.

She certainly was lovable wasn't she? Honestly, every once in a while, when I see a stack of red delicious, I think of her.
