Gas powered cars are cheaper to operate
-
A new study that I saw which concludes that EV cars are more expensive on a "per mile" comparison. They take into account "wasted time" spent refueling, driving out of your way to recharge, and potential cost to install home charger. Interesting reading. I think alot of the extra costs will decrease with improved batteries and infrastructure.
-
The costs will come down eventually, but you're right that for now it's still more expensive to own an EV. I recall a few years ago when I was buying a normal sedan, I was told the hybrid/battery versions of the car took about 5 years of gas savings to break even based on the higher price tag.

And then in 7 or 8 years, when the battery goes bad, you lose all that savings. My '04 Civic hybrid battery cost me $2,400 to replace, last year. When they say that most Americans can not handle a $600.00 emergency, that's going to come as a real shock when they need to shell out $2,400.

@89th said in Gas powered cars are cheaper to operate: The costs will come down eventually In '04, I asked about the cost to replace the Hybrid battery and was told it was currently about $2,400. In 2020, it was still $2,400. So much for the price coming down.

So much for the price coming down.$2400 in 2020 has the buying power of about $1700 in 2004. $2400 in 2004 is inflation-adjusted to $3300 in 2020. "Price going down?" Nah. But your dollar is worth less today than 16-17 years ago.

@jolly said in Gas powered cars are cheaper to operate: $2400 buys a lot of gas for a non-hybrid car that gets 40mpg. Sure does. I won't ever be buying a hybrid again and certainly not an EV. I don't know what the cost is for an EV battery replacement and I can guarantee I will personally never find out.

I just can't believe that freaking great big batteries are the future.

"Battery" as a concept is very broad, generally an energy storage device that can supply power using its stored energy. It does not even need to be "rechargeable." The Matrix imagines a world where humans used as "batteries." Even after we figure out miniaturized room-temperature nuclear fusion, it would still be a "battery," and that may not be a bad future.

Maybe hydrogen fuel car? I know that there are many obstacle to overcome with safety, pressure tanks, etc. but could be a way to go. Hydrogen is easy to get, and unlimited.

Maybe I am a mind reader (LOL) but this article showed up after I had posted above. (https://news.yahoo.com/toyota-testing-hydrogen-combustion-engines-042052030.html)

(https://news.yahoo.com/toyota-testing-hydrogen-combustion-engines-042052030.html) @taiwan_girl I remember reading that Toyota is really interested in hydrogen as a fuel. I was aware of them looking at it for fuel cells, but not as something to be used in an internal combustion engine.

Hydrogen has to be the long-term solution. Batteries are disgusting great chemical things, whose main benefit appears to be making people feel better about themselves.
