@Doctor-Phibes said in Nuclear Households: When I was growing up in the UK, we always thought of America as having a really high divorce rate. I'm sure it's a stereotype, but after living here for 20 years I'm also sure there's some truth to it. The numbers are old, but I imagine the trend hasn't changed much. https://divorcescience.org/for-students/world-divorce-statistics-comparisons-among-countries/ Note the USA was at 2.8 and the UK at 2.1. [image: 1671627369789-image.jpeg] Interesting numbers here: https://www.unifiedlawyers.com.au/blog/global-divorce-rates-statistics/ [image: 1671627316706-screenshot-2022-12-21-at-6.54.57-am.png] What's the old saw? "Half of all marriages end in divorce. The other half ends in death."

@taiwan_girl That's a dirty little secret of college sports... A four year athletic scholarship is actually four one-year scholarships. Most schools uphold their end of the bargain, should a player become injured, etc., but they don't have to.

Jefferson had the most slaves of any serving president and U. S. Grant had one for about year until 1859 when he made him a free man. What were the slaves skin colors? Midnight and Quarter to 12. What did you think, Toby?

Feds paying for services is fine. Feds paying to prevent free speech raises questions. Feds paying to influence elections raises questions.

@taiwan_girl said in The FBI Cooks: UNRELATED TANGENT ALERT It always frustrates me when budgets are "use or lose". Seems to discourage long term planning in many times. For whatever reason, the spends are down one year. So, then the bosses assume that is normal and you get less next year. I agree that's aggravating. One of the many reasons governments always get bigger, but never smaller.

I think a lot of it is going from fresh to processed foods and eating different types of foods. Taiwan is a perfect example. It was pretty rare to see a fat person in Taiwan when I was growing up. My mom would go down to the fresh market every day to buy vegatables, etc. Now, I can tell that the overall weight of kids has increased vs. me when I was a kid. Part of it is economy. Taiwan has become richer, so people can eat more food. Years ago, people had just enough to eat to survive. Not much extra. So, I guess it is a combination of things.

Just curious: what was the average age of the crowd? When I saw the Specials and the Beat, everyone was either slightly older than me, or much younger and Asian. I don't know what's up with that. Jools hosts a live TV show on the BBC, Later! With Jools Holland Very familiar! Watched it every week when I was in Oz. It was great.

@jon-nyc "FBI pushes Twitter to kill stories with no evidence of crime." Were the FBI warnings of a Russian hack-and-leak operation relating to Hunter Biden based on any new intel? No, they weren't “Through our investigations, we did not see any similar competing intrusions to what had happened in 2016,” admitted FBI agent Elvis Chan in Nov. Indeed, Twitter executives repeatedly reported very little Russian activity. E.g., on Sept 24, 2020, Twitter told FBI it had removed 345 “largely inactive” accounts “linked to previous coordinated Russian hacking attempts.” They “had little reach & low follower accounts." Or..."Twitter lawyer (who was twice investigated for leaking) claims laptop was hacked with no evidence." In response to Roth, Baker repeatedly insists that the Hunter Biden materials were either faked, hacked, or both, and a violation of Twitter policy. Baker does so over email, and in a Google doc, on October 14 and 15. Or..."FBI tells US Senators of hacking campaign on Twitter...with no evidence." In 2020, the FBI gave a briefing to Senator Grassley and Johnson, claiming evidence of “Russian interference” into their investigation of Hunter Biden. The briefing angered the Senators, who say it was done to discredit their investigation.
