Funny, that was my stop in Brooklyn. Some of you probably got off there to come to my piano parties.

@Copper said in Stone Bench: Where would that fit? An urban museum, maybe. Our decor is very traditional. If it were modern-ish, I could see it in a hallway, as a place to put on shoes, etc. I found the approach to attaching the wood to the stone interesting, by the way. Steel tubes and rods - epoxy.

The claim relates to breaches of UK Data Protection law arising from the inaccurate processing of the President’s personal data by Orbis following the publication of the false ‘Steele Dossier,’” according to Lowles. Doesn’t seem to be a libel suit, not that I have any claim to understanding British law.

@Horace said in College Gainful Employment Rule: I’m not a huge believer in formal education in any subject not directly tied to marketable skills. I am. It's what I did, and it more than worked out. It made me overqualified for almost every job I could possibly apply for.

It’s the only way it could ever happen sustainably. And even then it would be hard to sustain when one party gained full control subsequently.

From drug trafficking to mass migration to climate change, the many shared challenges between the United States and Latin America cannot be addressed by the antiquated Monroe Doctrine. These are some of the most pressing issues of our time, and they call for a process that stresses respect and cooperation. Sure, a process that stresses respect and cooperation sounds good.

@89th said in Hey Aqua - Baldur's Gate3: Good stuff man. You’re doing it right. I know that was a way over-detailed explanation. But I think about this a lot. Decades of incredibly dumb shit could've been avoided if my folks had simply just volunteered or something. Really want to avoid that myself.

@Jolly said in RIP Diane Feinstein: I hope dying at the office was worth it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/09/29/feinstein-senate-deaths/ The article notes that Senators dying in office used to be more common, but has become rare these days. That’s 10 sitting senators who died in office, all in the 65th Congress. This was before the admission of Alaska and Hawaii, so it was 10 of 96 senators, more than 10 percent of the total. And while this toll was exceptional, it wasn’t an aberration. An average of six senators died during each two-year period in the 58th to 62nd Congresses. . This is no longer common. The death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Friday marked the first death of a senator in office since the passing of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2018, according to the Senate historian. Before that, the most recent such death was that of Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) in 2013. In other words, over the past 10 years, only Feinstein and McCain have died in office.

@Aqua-Letifer Law provides grounds for prosecution, yet whether to prosecute remains a choice. I have no sympathy for the businesses of the world who profit by infringing the rights of others. Still, it costs large sums of money to prosecute a case in court. Imagine a world where LLM generative AI turns out to be a flop, where ChatGPT spouts gibberish rather than prose. In such a world, the developers of ChatGPT would have exhausted their initial tens of millions in early funding, present a few conference papers, and that would be the end of it. Most authors/publishers would likely never know that their copyrighted works have been used to train an AI large language model, and even if they know, they would see insufficient monetary incentives to sue. (Why spend millions in legal fees to sue a bunch of developers who have exhausted their funding and has no prospect of making more money with their gibberish AI? Just for the principle? There are many researchers and developers using similar datasets without permission who aren't getting sued.) Now that the world see the value of a certain way of doing generative AI, it is right that we seriously consider how to divide the large expected bounties among all contributing parties, authors and publishers included. Let the lawsuits run their courses. Let the advocates and the lobbyists make their pleas. And see what public policies emerge from all this.
